A lot of times in these videos it may come across as I’m always excited to train BJJ. That I never get tired. That I never lack enthusiasm.
And that simply isn’t true.
I’m human and lack excitement for training from time to time.
Very often one of the periods where I always feel a lull in my excitement for Brazilian Jiu-jitsu training is after big competitions wins.
The excitement of winning the tournament or fight always sends me down to at least a week of lethargy. Then it picks back up afterwards and I get back to normal.
I’ve found that if I try to fight against this feeling and push it, it simply gets worse. But if I simply go with it and give it time to run it’s course. I come back strong.
And in this video I talk about how the cool morning I experienced felt like I feel right now. The temperature dropped and life seems to slow down a bit after the rush of the summer heat.
Like that, I feel as though my body is slowing down after the heat of hard training and competition followed by the excitement of meeting new people at seminars.
And if you feel like this, lacking excitement or motivation for jiujitsu, don’t worry it happens to all of us. It’s ok.

Years ago I experienced a lot of pain in my lower back, groin and hips that would come and go. After trying different methods to fix it I realized it was a muscular imbalance issue.
In this video I show a few weird but useful exercises for BJJ practitioners.
In the beginning I talk a little about how Brazilian Jiu-jitsu creates an imbalance because of constant flexion in the hips from positions like Guard.
So the exercises that can be really helpful are those that do the opposite.
The 1st exercises are a prehab rehab type exercises that focus on extension muscles like the glutes.
I’ve done these with my students in the past and in some cases their muscles are so weak that twitching and cramping has happened.
Next I show how to add a little weight and get more strength in the positions using a barbell or something like a Wreck Bag.
If you’re experience any issues with your hips, groin or lower back in Brazilian Jiujitsu. You may find some benefit from working on hip extension exercises to correct the imbalance.
If you’re interested in any of the products listed. I’m not an affiliate of them. I just like them.
Hip Circle Bands from Mark Bell

Hope this video helps!

To Check out the Half Guard Sweeper Series Click the Link Below:
https://chewjitsu.clickfunnels.com/chewjitsu-half-guard-series
In my BJJ Half Guard series I cover my exact Half Guard techniques.
These techniques came originally from Renato Tavares, one of my old coaches, who showed me 3 simple techniques.
Those 3 techniques grew into a whole series of attacks, positional controls, counters. A whole system.
This exchange from one to the other reminds me of the Heros Journey that Joseph Campbell writes about.
He talks about the Hero going out and getting the thing and then bringing it back to share.
And in BJJ, we are all the hero of our own journey, and we do just that. We go out, learn techniques, develop them and then bring them back around to the people behind us.
And if you’d like to develop your own Half Guard. Check out my Half Guard series: https://chewjitsu.clickfunnels.com/chewjitsu-half-guard-series

This Brabo Choke is a fantastic option from the Full Guard in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.
The Brabo Grip itself is excellent for posture and Full Guard control. And it leads to numerous sweeps and submissions.
I often show the Brabo grip early on to my White Belts because it’s strength can often be helpful for a newcomer to BJJ who wouldn’t mind a little added control.
In this video I’m not going off a viewer request. Instead, I wanted to simply show you a nice Brazilian Jiujitsu technique that might be useful for your game.
As you’ll see in the video. I show the basics of how to open up the Gi to achieve the grip. Then discuss how to setup the choke or use it for positional dominance.
I hope that the technique helps you with your Full Guard submission game in BJJ.

In this episode of the podcast we talk about following your own path.
We’re on this subject because Chad is leaving to move down to Tennessee.
We also share some stories about the No Gi Pans, competing and even the nerdy way I keep my journals.
I hope you enjoy this episode of the Chewjitsu podcast.
