I am a big believer in backup plans at all stages. These are some very late considerations for escapes I refer to as Hail Marys. These are definitely not what you want to have as your primary or only option for escapes, and you would obviously like to never find yourself in these threats at all, but for last-second counters they are pretty solid.
A lot of these exist, but for time constraints I just chose some of my favorites.

Here are a few unique opportunities that arise occasionally, which actually make submissions available from inferior positions. It is obviously better to gain the superior position, control and take the submission safely from there…however, sometimes the element of surprise from a bottom submission can take someone off guard.

Highlights of Tony Ferguson’s unique and highly active bottom MMA game – kicks, elbows, punches, palm strikes and submissions all with his back on the mat! Also look out for the innovative sweeps, technical stand-ups, rolls and some crazy guard retention skills.
Anthony Armand “Tony” Ferguson (born 12 February 1984) is an American professional mixed martial artist competing in the lightweight division of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).
A professional competitor since 2008, Ferguson was the winner of The Ultimate Fighter 13. In 2017, Ferguson defeated Kevin Lee (from his back) to become the interim UFC Lightweight Champion.
After the win Eddie Bravo awarded Ferguson with a black belt in the 10th planet system of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fqqWysEqb_g
Ferguson also set a new record for most consecutive wins in UFC lightweight division history with 10 and became widely regarded by pundits as one of the best lightweights in the history of the UFC.
Once you have mastered the basic armlock you’re going to need to know how to set people up to get the submissions you want. This armlock from side control will really help you stand out in class. The best part of this submission from side control is you don’t risk losing the position. A lot of techniques have a really high risk of losing the position. This armlock actually helps you control the position while leading to a submission.
High Guard is a very effective offensive guard. Grab wrists to control. The leg over their shoulder and squeezing your legs traps them and give you a variety of simple submissions.

COMING SOON: Never Tap Again! Igor Gracie, the son of legendary Rolls Gracie walks you through how to unlock the puzzle of some the most troublesome submissions in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Triangles… Kimuras… Bow and Arrows… Arm Bars… Omoplatas… Plus more! You will never survive class without these escapes.
Some of my favorite, high-percentage submissions from side control. Mostly arm locks, but a couple chokes mentioned here. Let me know what you think, like, subscribe and all that.

If you find yourself stuck on top side control with nothing going on, the cradle might be the solution to your problems.
I have been inspired as of late to use the cradle more often, as I have some new variations from Robert Drysdale on the cradle. So I have been exploring the concept more and more to see what I can come up with. So check out this cradle attack from side mount. It can give you an arm bar or a back mount depending on your opponents reaction.
A shout out to catch wrestling master Neil Melanson for the back control grip switch, which makes the back transition off the cradle much smoother. Share your comments below and let me know what you think.
