Recently I received a request for some simple Spider Guard sweeps that you can use in BJJ. So in this video I cover 2 Spider Guard Techniques that are, in my opinion, fairly easy to implement. I say this because a lot of grapplers want to develop some sort of open guard game eventually but picking the right sweep out of the thousands that exist can be tough. So these 2 sweeps are great starters for anyone trying to develop an open guard game.
In the video I show a basic opening to a open guard position discussing the importance of grips and tension. Then I get into the 2 spider guard sweeps.
The 1st one is the Spider Scissor Sweep. I call it this because it shares some similar mechanics as the traditional scissor sweep from full guard. The sweep can also land you in a great finishing position in mount where you’ll have both arms still tangled up and ready to attack.
The 2nd sweep is the Thread Sweep. This sweep used to be my “magic sweep” back in the day. People would step up to a combat base and I’d use the sweep. When you practice it you’ll definitely feel the power of the position.
So thanks again for the question, and for any of you wanting to open up your guard a bit more I hope this video is useful to you!
Thanks for watching.

In this video I talk about the idea of aggression in BJJ and how it translates off the mat as well. The video was inspired by numerous questions from viewers who say that they either 1. Have too much aggression or 2. Have too little aggression. Most of them speak in the context of Brazilian Jiu-jitsu but also comment on how this has translated over to their life off the mat.
Whether you’re too aggressive or not enough I believe Brazilian Jiujitsu training, as well as other combat sports, offers people a great chance to channel that warrior like energy. They can learn to release the pressure which many people say Jiu-jitsu does. But they can also learn to grow their ability to be firm and forceful should the situation call for it.
This ability to gain control over our mindset is one of the most useful parts of Bjj training.

I haven’t been in the Down position in Wrestling in about 16 years. And I’m not sure why but I figured it would be fun to have Brandon pin me and see how long I could last. Well. . . as you’ll see in the video it didn’t last long.
You may have seen Brandon rolling in some of my other videos. He’s a stud wrestler and was the NAIA 285lbs champ in 2019. Not to mention he’s about 230lbs and moves like hes 185lbs. You can put in his name on youtube and see a bunch of his matches. He moves like a cat.
Either way The Chewster didn’t even last a minute. Next time we’ll have a redo and I’ll see if I can squeak out a full 60 seconds.
That said, enjoy the video of me getting pinned.

In today’s no gi BJJ rolling video you’ll see me hunting Kimura catches and Back Takes while my student Justin (recent Brown Belt Masters 2019 No Gi Worlds Champ) is hunting guillotines.
When you watch the video I hope you enjoy the rolls themselves. But more importantly for your own training I hope you take the idea of focus to your own training.
When we are rolling there is a deliberate purpose to the BJJ training. We have specific techniques we’d like to aim for. Granted we don’t always hit them, it’s our main focus.
This is something you should be doing in your Brazilian Jiu-jitsu training all the time. This is how you improve the techniques and begin to develop styles and systems. You test the technique out, make mistakes, adjust and then re-test.
So again I hope you enjoyed the No Gi Brazilian Jiujitsu rolling session and maybe got something for your own training.
Thanks for watching.

In today’s video I address a question from someone who’s just beginning Brazilian Jiu-jitsu and they’re curious about the high drop out rate with BJJ White Belts. He said he saw a video that said 90% of White Belts never make it to Blue Belt and he’s wondering why that is.
Additionally he says that he has been training for 1 week and realizes BJJ isn’t for him but that he will finish up his 3 month membership and then be done with it.
During the video I share a weird analogy that I used with my students about White Belts being like baby sea turtles. I know that’s weird but stick with me here. A baby sea turtle hatches and immediately it moves towards the blue ocean. During this dash into the water it lacks the ability to move well and is bombarded with obstacles (mainly birds getting lunch). The turtle has one choice, just keep going forward.
A brand new BJJ White Belt lacks the ability to move well on the mat and is moving towards the Blue Belt. Like the turtle the White Belt has only one option to improve, keeping going forward, more specifically just show up.
Here’s the national geographic video with the sea turtles I was talking about: https://youtu.be/Ipf0fehg5os
I also talk about the attitude of the person asking the question.
Hopefully this video is useful to you or at least maybe you’ll find the turtle analogy interesting.
Thanks for watching!
