Today we’ve got a question from a BJJ purple belt viewer named Jeremy.
He asked how to get over the negative feeling of using white belts as “test dummies” for trying out new moves in Jiu-Jitsu.
If you’re newer to BJJ and don’t know how this works, when you’re more experienced than your partner, you have a lot of options for how to approach a roll. You can just smash them, or, preferably, you can use that time to try new techniques in a live setting.
Hopefully, you find this video helpful.
Thanks for watching.

Today we’ve got a question from Peter, a BJJ blue belt who was promoted after about 18 months of training.
He then had to take seven months off for shoulder surgery and has been back on the mats for a month now. He’s happy to be rolling again, but he’s running into a challenge.
Before his injury, Peter was focused on developing his open guard and guard retention, but now he feels like people are blasting past his guard, and there’s nothing he can do to stop it.
He asked whether he should focus on rebuilding his previous skills or approach his training like a white belt and start learning new skills from scratch.
Thanks for the question, Peter.
Here’s what I think…

Today’s video is for those of you in your first couple of years of training, who struggles with defense, escaping side control, bottom of mount, anything like that.
It’s a White Belt lesson that we all get, that I didn’t grasp until I was a Brown Belt in BJJ.
Hopefully, if you’re new to training in jiu-jitsu, you will find this video helpful.
Thanks for watching.

Today we’ve got a question from a fellow Black Belt and Gym Owner and it’s about Burnout.
We’ll call him Coach Bob.
Coach Bob has been doing BJJ for 20 years and is starting to feel pretty burnt out.
He is running a good business, but the training, the rolling, the physical side of it, is burning him out. He feels like he just doesn’t have the passion for it.
He says I look like I’m still passionate about it, even after 20 years of training and teaching, and wonders how I do it.
Hopefully, this video will help Coach Bob and anyone else who is running into a similar problem.
Thanks for watching.

A lot of people struggle with aggression on the Jiu-Jitsu mats.
I’m not talking about wild, uncontrolled aggression, but rather technical, efficient, BJJ-specific aggressiveness.
Recently, I had a student dealing with this exact issue. She’s a recreational competitor who was frustrated because she didn’t want to come across as a jerk to her training partners — but she also didn’t want to be too passive.
In this video, I’ll share what I told her to help develop healthy, controlled aggression in a safe and technical way, and how you can apply the same ideas to your own training or competition.
Hope you enjoy the video.
Thanks for watching!

How to reverse the backtake when your opponent tries to use a twister hook on you (from https://www.grapplearts.com/rollingbacktakes)

Today, I’m going to share 3 guard passing and top pressure ideas for BJJ that work well for us middle-aged and older (master’s and up) grapplers.
I highly recommend this for those of us in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu who are no longer in our 20s but still love to roll around and do Jiu-Jitsu.
1 caveat is that everything in this video is fundamentally sound and works just fine for younger grapplers as well. But for us older grapplers, we don’t have a choice, we have to find ways to slow things down.
In fact, I’d probably even recommend adding this guard passing style to your game, regardless of your age.
Hopefully, you guys find the tips in this video helpful.
Thanks for watching.
