This BJJ Belt Gauntlet Left Me Speechless
Recently, my buddy Adam who was promoted to BJJ Black Belt.
At out gym walks the gauntlet for Belt Promotions.
This Belt Promotion was absolutely nuts!
It left me speechless.
I’ve never seen someone walk the gauntlet in that manner.
Adam is crazy.
Thanks!

Calling Your Submission (Rolling Game / Drill)
One of the BJJ rolling style games we have in our gym is calling your submission.
Basically when rolling with your partner, you tell them the submission you plan to use in advance.
The point of this rolling drill is to help develop more creativity for our Brazilian Jiu-jitsu game.
For instance if someone knows you’re going for a particular submission or technique. They guard against it.
This type of Brazilian jiujitsu training forces you to work more creatively to find the submission. Because they’re defense for that submission will be much higher.
Making you look for different ways to get it!
In this video my student Justin and I rolled. He was looking for leg locks and I was looking for an armbar.
You’ll see that we hit all sorts of weird angles and positions as we chase a technique that the other knows they are going for.
I really enjoy incorporating this type of training into my Brazilian Jiujitsu as it helps me focus on a limited set of options which can help keep away from being overwhelmed with options.
I hope you guys enjoy the video!

BJJ Drill to Create Movement & Attacks from The Guard
Sometimes to create the openings for a submission or sweep (or even just the ability to stand up) you need to get your opponent moving and unstabilised. This is one of my favorite drills to create that movement – it’s a great warmup drill with a lot of applications.
Don’t Just Escape the BJJ Style Scarf Hold (Get an Armbar Too)
What is the best way to escape a Scarfhold style side control in BJJ?
This is the Brazilian Jiu-jitsu question from Jack on Instagram. And in this video I share a way to escape the Scarfhold type Side Control position that comes up often.
The Scarf Hold position is also considered a modified version of Kesa Gatame can be tough to escape if you aren’t familiar with it.
The way you escape Scarfhold will vary from a traditional Side Control.
In this video I try to explain some of the differences to give a better idea as to how to escape when faced with this position in Brazilian Jiujitsu.
I also show a escape to Armbar. The Armbar can happen when you’re opponent doesn’t let go of the arm that’s got an Underhook.
If you training Brazilian Jiu-jitsu and are having trouble with this position. Hopefully this video is helpful!
Thanks!

Most Efficient Leglock Position vs a Jacked Opponent
The 411/honeyhole position with the reverse heel hook the most efficient, most powerful leglock you can use against a really big, really strong opponent. In this video you’ll also learn how to adapt kneebar entries so that you can get into the super efficient 411 position.
BJJ Overwhelmed my Life. . . What Now?
How do you lose the ALL or NOTHING mindset with BJJ training? How do you make Brazilian Jiu-jitsu a part of your life and not your whole life.
This is the question I received from Chris P. . . Last name Bacon. 😉
He says that he used to do BJJ in his 20s and now that he is doing BJJ after 30. He’s struggling to find a proper balance with his training.
In part because when he trained before, he trained like a mad man. And he finds that he is struggling to train less and still feel productive as an older guy in grappling.
In this video I share some of the struggles I’ve had over the years with different evolutions of myself. And the issues associated with that.
During the video I talk about everything from becoming an professional MMA fighter then leaving that, becoming focused on BJJ competitions and then pulling away.
I also talk about how my former self, like a lingering shadow, tries to pull me back into my old rhythms and patterns.
And by pulling away from some of my former identities creates a lot of uncertainty and anxiety because I’ve built myself up into something and then I’m moving on.
And I share this because Chris is probably battling with the new version of himself and the former version who used to train more.
Chris, and anyone else watching. I hope this helps!

The Exact Stretches I Used to Break the Guard Better
In a recent video I talked about how I used to be unable to sit back on my heels. And how this made my worst position in BJJ being inside someones Guard.
Following that video many of you had questions about how I was able to develop the ability to sit back on my heels.
In this video I talk about the issues that this muscular issue created in my Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.
And then I go into detail about the stretches I used to fix it.
Also with me in this video is my good friend Eugene. Who runs a Youtube Channel The Jiujitsu Therapist
Click here to check out his Podcast:
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCwUYfr1lIVYg7fBC1Slqitg
You can also check out some cool down stretches for training here:
And for all of you who sent me the question about your tight knees, hips and quads in relation to sitting back on your heels. I hope this helps you out!
These really were the stretches that allowed me to have a strong Guard breaking ability and even cleared up a lot of knee stiffness I had.
Hope this video helps you sit back on you heels if you can’t and helps you break the Guard better in BJJ.

What Does It Mean to Be a BJJ Black Belt ?
Yesterday I had the pleasure of promoting my good friend Adam to Black Belt in BJJ.
As a Brazilian Jiu-jitsu coach, I desperately hope I’m not only helping make my students better at BJJ. But I also hope that I’m making a positive impact on their life in some way outside of the gym.
Everyone has their mission and that’s mine.
When Adam gave his Black Belt speech about what it means to be a BJJ Black Belt at least to him, I was moved. Because of the way he felt for me and all of the other people on the team.
You’ll see it on my face, I became watery eyed.
For me, that lets me now I’m on the right track.
In regards to Adam himself. There is so much I could say about him.
In fact, it’s difficult to condense your feelings and memories down to a simple post.
So I won’t try today.
Instead, I’ll just say that I’m proud of Adam, and I am so very thankful that he found his way to our gym 9 years ago.
He’s been one of my best training partners, someone I look forward to seeing on a regular basis and we’ve had some fun times together.
Congratulations to Adam! I’m proud of him. As a coach, brother in arms and friend.

BJJ Competitions Banned . . . Come on Canada
If there was a BJJ tournament in your area that had no winners, no losers, and no medals. . . would you participate in it? Do you think it would even be worth doing? Would you go through all the hard training to prepare for it?
This is the Brazilian Jiu-jitsu question that was thrown to me recently on Instagram.
Our friend who lives in a particular part of Canada where prize fighting was banned. And it just so happens that Brazilian Jiujitsu competitions were classified as prize fighting.
After the law was passed a BJJ tournament was held. And during this BJJ competition. No medals were given, no hands raised and no podium was stepped on to determine a winner.
The questions asked from our friend were. . .
Are medals a big deal? And should be people feel grateful for having a some sort of tournament in their area?
Now I don’t know all of the details of this situation. But I interpreted this as there were no winners and losers.
And I answer the question accordingly.
I hope that maybe you find the video at the very least, entertaining and possibly give you an idea as to why many people compete.
Thanks for watching.

Open Guard Advice for Beginners
The open guard is an essential position in BJJ, but it can also be very confusing for beginners. In this video I show you the two most common errors people make when they start incorporating this position into their game.
Here’s a checklist of the most common forms of open guard: https://www.grapplearts.com/a-glossary-of-guards-part-2-the-open-guard/
And here’s a breakdown of the Tripod Sweep technique I mentioned in the video above: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1p-2qBPL9tM
4 Smooth BJJ Back Take Drills (# 4 Will Make Your Head Spin Literally)
Looking for some BJJ Drills to take the Back for your training? Check out these 4 BJJ Drills I use in this video.
Unlike some of my other BJJ drills videos. You get to come along for the ride with my students as if you were present for one of my Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes.
In this video I show 4 different drills to build up your ability to be a Back Taking Machine.
The 1st Drill in this sequence of movements and techniques is a Near Side Back Take from the Double Under Pass.
The 2nd Brazilian Jiujitsu technique / drill is the Up and Dump pass to a Hip Switch Back Take. Which comes from the Double Under Pass.
The third Back Take option comes from the Turtle Position when the person tries to roll and we roll with them to snag the Back Mount.
The 4th one. Which is fun one. Uses the lapels and a side roll to whip around and take the Back Mount.
All 4 of these are very simple and practical options to throw into just about anyone’s BJJ game. And hopefully the idea of keeping continuous movement as shown in the video will give you some ideas for other positions, techniques and drills for your Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Training.
Hope you enjoyed the video!

How to Beat Someone Better Than You
“How can I beat someone better than me?” I get this question a lot and you might be wondering the same thing too. The answer is that you have to find at least one area, either technical or physical, where you are better than he is. In the video I give lots of examples of what this might look like on the mats.
