I got a question about different types of submissions that can be used from the Turtle position in BJJ. So in today’s video I show the tried and true Clock Choke. But as you’ll see in the video. I place a huge amount of importance on the 1st grip you acquire.
In this video I also clip in a Brazilian Jiu-jitsu match I had back in 2017 where I used this principle. I got the finishing grip very quickly and while my body was moving all over the place I was still able to finish the choke at the end.
I wanted to show this because a lot of times people fail to recognize the importance of getting strong grips early on. They think about the choke, the finish but forget that strong grips setup the finish.
Hope this video is helpful to you!

The clock choke is one of the classic BJJ submissions. The first time I saw it was when Wallid Ismael choked Royce Gracie unconscious with it in their epic match when Royce, the consummate warrior, refused to tap. It’s a fantastic choke that you should definitely add to your arsenal if you’re training with the gi sometimes.

In this clip I talk about my expectations and what each of the 5 belt in BJJ mean to me. I explain what I would encourage people to focus on as a White Belt, Blue Belt, Purple Belt, Brown Belt and Black Belt.
Keep in mind these are my ideas and philosophies on BJJ training and if belts didn’t exist you could replace them with certain periods of experience.
Hopefully the video is helpful for you and your won path in Brazilian Jiu-jtisu.

There’s a story behind this red square of mats in my BJJ training area. Most people see this and think I ran out of money or didn’t order enough mats. But that’s not it.
You see, I grappled and rolled on those red mats for over 10 years. Much of who I am today was forged through the difficulties of BJJ and MMA training on those red mats.
And I keep that little piece of red mat to remind me everything from, all the difficulties I experienced during my early years of BJJ training to the countless hours spent developing myself and our gym so that it would be something special to the students inside, to being so broke when I first started coaching full time that I couldn’t afford my own place and I either couch surfed or on plenty of nights those red mats became my bed.
I keep memories like these in my back pocket so I don’t forget them.
They give me contrast and remind me of how lucky I am and keep me grounded so I don’t ever think I’m too good to answer a simple question. Because I remember I struggled with those same questions.
Even when we get through this mess (which we will get through this). Keep these experiences in your back pocket. Remember them. So that when life returns to it’s comfortable norm you don’t fall back asleep and take everything for granted.
Instead stay awake for your life, remember that tomorrow isn’t guaranteed and that safety and security is an illusion. Be grateful and appreciate the beautiful moments you experience and the amazing people you meet because they won’t be there forever. They may not be there tomorrow.
Appreciate the hell out of them and that everyday you have a chance to enjoy existence.
Hope you guys are well out there. Stay strong, take care of your neighbors and take a moment to appreciate something small in your life today.

I was looking through an old computer at the gym the other day and I found this super old roll with one of my guys Rich who is now a Black Belt. During our no gi rolling session you’ll see a much “rougher” version of my game. Definitely similar to what I do now but much less refined. Keep in mind this was 2010.
I narrated the session with you because I figured it would be fun to sit down with you and watch myself flop around the mat. In a lot of cases it’s easy to forget how far you’ve come. Looking at my game now there are just holes all over the place.
But anyways, I hope you enjoyed seeing me from back in the day.
And if you enjoyed this narrated roll and would like more content like it check out my Chewjitsu Vault on my website at: https://www.chewjitsu.net/vault
Hope you had fun with the video.
Thanks for watching.

Are you worried about gaining weight and getting out of shape because of the quarantine and not being able to train? This has been a really common question I’ve received over the last couple of weeks. And it’s the question for today’s Chewy Ramble.
Our friend, like most of us, is unable to train BJJ currently because of the restrictions going on in his area. He says he’s worried about gaining weight and letting his diet slip. So his question was to see if I had any dieting tips for dealing with the situation while stuck at home unable to train.
In this video I outline 3 tips you can use to keep your diet in check while you’re unable to take part in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu training. That said, they’re also tips that could serve you well even after you go back to training.
These tips are also some of the same tips that helped me avoid gaining a bunch of weight in 2014 during my last long layoff from training.
Hopefully the video is useful to you and if you’d like more tips head on over to: https://www.chewjitsu.net/time-off and register to get my free at home training resource loaded with more info about dieting, bjj study and at home workouts to help you through the quarantine.
Thanks for watching.

Have you ever tried to convince someone to come back to BJJ after quitting? Maybe a training partner, friend or something. I ask the question because in today’s Q&A the question is “Have you ever convinced someone to come back to BJJ?”
I assume this question is because our friend is trying to get a someone to come back to Brazilian Jiu-jitsu training.
In this video I’ll explain why I don’t try and convince people to come back to Brazilian Jiujitsu anymore. I used to, but I don’t anymore.
Instead, as I talk about in the video, I do something else that is much more powerful and attract them back to training without having me try to convince them. In fact, one of the Black Belts I promoted recently came back in this manner.
Hope you enjoy the video, and if you’re trying to convince someone to come back to your BJJ gym take the experience I share to heart. It’s more common than not.
Thanks for watching.
