Recently I posted a video about a guy who was injuring all the women in his Brazilian Jiu-jitsu training.
You can watch the video here: https://youtu.be/p3-t6q0bnM4
In the video I responded to a coach who was dealing with an overly aggressive grappler who was running off all of the women.
Many people responded negatively to the video saying I shouldn’t treat women in BJJ different than men in BJJ.
That we are equal and should be treating accordingly.
And in addition they said that for self defense purposes, I wasn’t preparing women properly.
As a coach for a decade. I can assure you that women and men are biologically not the same.
And typically speaking their societal conditioning isn’t either.
While there are men who are less physically imposing than some women.
For the most part. Men are large and more physically imposing than women.
And keeping that in mind I personally attempt to give women a chance to learn without getting the crap kicked out of them in every training session.
And just to be clear. This is the training method I use with all the people that come into the gym to take on Brazilian Jiujitsu. Men and women.
And when it comes to BJJ for self defense. The stress tolerance BJJ builds takes time!
The techniques of BJJ are useless if they are not accompanied with the ability to handle stress in physical confrontations.
You may know lots of techniques, but what can you do when faced with another person who tries to fight back?
Most people, men or women, are not equipped for that situation. Even if they think they are. And so building people up slowly allows us to build up someone properly.
I hope this video clears things up and makes sense.

Wrestlers who get into BJJ can often be the worst nightmare of a Guard focused player if that bottom player doesn’t know how to work their game against the wrestler.
In this video I answer a BJJ related question that comes from a viewer on Instgram.
His question is about dealing with Wrestlers in a Brazilian Jiu-jitsu competition that is coming up.
In this video I demonstrate my strategy to beating a Wrestler with Half Guard in Brazilian Jiujitsu.
As I show in the video, playing Half Guard can allow you the ability to get under the hips of the Wrestling based grappler to move them and throw them off their base.
That base of theirs is often the toughest part of their game and what keeps them on top of you like glue!
So if you’re having a similar issue to Gui, then I hope this video is helpful to you and helps you should you find yourself up against a Wrestler in a BJJ tournament.
Thanks!

A common question that gets asked by newcomers to BJJ is whether or not you have to compete to be good at Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.
This was the exact question I received from one of the viewers. He’s curious whether or not he has to compete to become good at Brazilian Jiujitsu.
In the video I share my thoughts on whether or not BJJ competitions are a must for progression in the Martial Art / Sport.
I also touch on the ideas of how I think tournaments and competitions can be beneficial to someone’s progression if not entirely a necessity.
I know that wrongly when I was a White Belt in BJJ. I thought that you had to do BJJ competitions.
As I’ve gotten older with years of experience under my belt I’ve realized the error of this thinking.
If you’re someone who is interested in BJJ competitions or curious about their necessity , I hope this video is helpful to you!
Thanks for watching!

One of the BJJ rolling style games we have in our gym is calling your submission.
Basically when rolling with your partner, you tell them the submission you plan to use in advance.
The point of this rolling drill is to help develop more creativity for our Brazilian Jiu-jitsu game.
For instance if someone knows you’re going for a particular submission or technique. They guard against it.
This type of Brazilian jiujitsu training forces you to work more creatively to find the submission. Because they’re defense for that submission will be much higher.
Making you look for different ways to get it!
In this video my student Justin and I rolled. He was looking for leg locks and I was looking for an armbar.
You’ll see that we hit all sorts of weird angles and positions as we chase a technique that the other knows they are going for.
I really enjoy incorporating this type of training into my Brazilian Jiujitsu as it helps me focus on a limited set of options which can help keep away from being overwhelmed with options.
I hope you guys enjoy the video!

What is the best way to escape a Scarfhold style side control in BJJ?
This is the Brazilian Jiu-jitsu question from Jack on Instagram. And in this video I share a way to escape the Scarfhold type Side Control position that comes up often.
The Scarf Hold position is also considered a modified version of Kesa Gatame can be tough to escape if you aren’t familiar with it.
The way you escape Scarfhold will vary from a traditional Side Control.
In this video I try to explain some of the differences to give a better idea as to how to escape when faced with this position in Brazilian Jiujitsu.
I also show a escape to Armbar. The Armbar can happen when you’re opponent doesn’t let go of the arm that’s got an Underhook.
If you training Brazilian Jiu-jitsu and are having trouble with this position. Hopefully this video is helpful!
Thanks!

How do you lose the ALL or NOTHING mindset with BJJ training? How do you make Brazilian Jiu-jitsu a part of your life and not your whole life.
This is the question I received from Chris P. . . Last name Bacon. 😉
He says that he used to do BJJ in his 20s and now that he is doing BJJ after 30. He’s struggling to find a proper balance with his training.
In part because when he trained before, he trained like a mad man. And he finds that he is struggling to train less and still feel productive as an older guy in grappling.
In this video I share some of the struggles I’ve had over the years with different evolutions of myself. And the issues associated with that.
During the video I talk about everything from becoming an professional MMA fighter then leaving that, becoming focused on BJJ competitions and then pulling away.
I also talk about how my former self, like a lingering shadow, tries to pull me back into my old rhythms and patterns.
And by pulling away from some of my former identities creates a lot of uncertainty and anxiety because I’ve built myself up into something and then I’m moving on.
And I share this because Chris is probably battling with the new version of himself and the former version who used to train more.
Chris, and anyone else watching. I hope this helps!
