I got a question about the Rubber Guard and specifically if there is any danger to the knees when hugging the knee as well as holding at the ankle to secure the position.
I reached out to 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt Brandon Mccaghren to break down the position, any safety concerns when utilizing the Rubber Guard, how to apply the technique properly, is there ever a reason to grab the ankle without holding the knee, the importance of following the opponent, the two styles of rubber guard, and much more.

One of the essentials for BJJ and function in general is hip mobility.
Having restrictions in the hip and hip pinching can hinder normal daily function as well as multiple aspects of jiu-jitsu.
In this video, I give two basic variations on how to not only stretch the musculature around the hip but also increase space in the hip joint for better hip movement, decreased pain, and for better Jiu-Jitsu.

This is a much bigger issue for us older guys. Take a long vacation -relaxing and maybe indulging just a little bit : ) our bodies just seem to say – hey no more Jiu Jitsu. And start to go soft – super fast. I wish it wasn’t the case but it sure is for me. This presents a problem when we re-enter the gym. Coming back, we see all our friends, we miss the rolling and we can often go in too hard too fast and really injure ourselves. This happened to me recently. As I prepare for my vacation in China – I discuss this important topic. Hope you like it.
