These are some major bits of advice I wish I had when I was a white belt.
Focusing too much on winning in the beginning can create a lot of stress and frustration because you will be losing a lot, shifting to a focus of learning makes every class a success. Learning to see jiu jitsu as multiple positions rather than looking for over arching principle is another major perspective change that gave me a lot more clarity in my development. Lastly specifc training and video study were the big secrets to my long term success and development in the sport.

With the endless number of BJJ technique videos out there. How useful are they for your live training when you get to the gym? This is the question from Amir who wants to know how valuable videos are for his Brazilian Jiu-jitsu training.
In this video I give some ideas to consider both from my experience as a coach teaching students and even from my experience as a student who used videos to improve (this one is a story about me as a BJJ White Belt watching videos to hit a slick armbar in training.)
All of this is to explain that BJJ videos (technique or otherwise) can help increase your overall BJJ IQ and help you learn inside your gym faster. Another idea I picked up from a great courses lecture is about how watching videos and even doing mental reps could help you do real physical reps better later on.
Anyways, hopefully the information in the video will give you some useful ideas to chew on for your own Brazilian Jiujitsu training.
Thanks for watching!

The scissor sweep is one of the most common sweeps in jiu-jitsu. We show 2 ways to counter the scissor sweep in this video. One is a smash pass the other ends in a pass but uses your opponents movement and energy against them.

Got a question today from Wade about when my BJJ game went to the next level and how I made that happen. He asks because he’s training hard but still struggling and is getting beat during training. He says he’s not getting discouraged, but he’d like to go from getting his butt kicked to doing some of the butt kicking.
In this video I share an idea about my mindset going into Brazilian Jiu-jitsu which is probably a bit counterintuitive. You see, most people tell you to visualize success and all of that. Early on, I had such low confidence in myself that I simply focused on training and didn’t set too many grand expectations. Sure I had dreams of being good at BJJ, but I didn’t really have expectations. This allowed me to be focused on the love of training and the day to day process rather than being obsessed with how things ended or worked out.
Along with this mindset I give some ideas that might be useful to you if you’re in Wade’s situation.
Hope the video is helpful, thanks for watching and I’ll talk to you next time.
