Today’s question comes from Chris, a BJJ White Belt, who’s experiencing one of the most common problems new BJJ competitors run into when they compete early on.
He says that in the gym he’s a tough roll with any of the other White Belts, he can roll round after round in his gym and generally feels confident. But whenever he goes to BJJ competitions he’s not able to pull the trigger on his techniques, he gets tired in the 1st couple of minutes in the match, feels shaky and weak in his arms and legs and loses his matches.
Now I replied back to Chris about whether or not he put much attention to his warm up. He said he didn’t and so that’s where I place a lot of focus for this video. Because in my experience the warm up before a match can make or break your performance. And it’s something that experienced competitors pay close attention to while new Brazilian Jiu-jitsu competitors don’t.
Hope this video helps you if you’re in the same situation.

In today’s video I have 2 questions that touch on the same topic. 1 comes from an 8 year BJJ Black Belt and the other is from a brand spankin’ new White Belt.
The main question is about how to relax more during rolling in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu training. The Black Belt is asking it more from a coaching perspective and the White Belt is asking from the perspective of a new student.
So in the video I explain about how I used to be a spazzy White Belt, how I deal with them as coaches to help them relax and then my tips for the people asking questions.
If you’re in a similar situation then I hope the video helps you!

“I want to get better in BJJ.” I get a messages like this from new White Belts all the time. But when I ask people what they mean by “better” they typically don’t have a rock solid answer. So in this video I wanted to give someone who’s newer to Brazilian Jiu-jitsu some ideas to focus on in order to get better.
The most important part is know what you’re focusing on. Most of the time when people say better they don’t define what they actually mean. So that’s probably the most important part. If you’re going to strive to get better you need to know what you mean.
But if you’re a newer White Belt I hope the video is useful.

In today’s video I answer a question about a BJJ White Belt who’s worried about being a 1 trick pony. Basically he’s been using a particular set of attacks from a position recently and it’s been working for him. But he’s worried about relying too much on this 1 area of his game.
In the video I’ll explain why it’s not a bad idea to be a 1 trick pony in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. . . at least at 1st.
This comes from years of experience and watching students develop their skills on the mats. And 1 common characteristic is that many of the good ones develop a particular area of their game over the rest 1st, and then work on the other ones.
Hopefully the video is useful to you.

The other day I was talking with one of my Blue Belts and White belts after training and we were talking about competitions. We got into the subject of weight, size and the look of people. The White Belt shared a bit of worry and intimidation about the size of potential people at his weight class.
And as I’ll share in the video looks can be deceiving in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu competitions and in general. In some cases I’ve gotten worked up over someone’s overall appearance only to beat them handedly then other times I’ve taken someone too lightly because they look physically weak. . . and then they rip my head off.
I shared this story because it’s something many of us do and I was curious if you do it as well and so I’d be curious to hear your experiences in the comments.
Thanks for watching and look forward to seeing your feedback.
