Solo BJJ drills are no replacement for the real thing. But solo BJJ drills can be a great way to get some movement in when a partner is not available. Maybe when you’re at home or unable to roll.
In this video I share 11 solo BJJ drills you can do on a stability ball that will help build your guard passing game and hip movement.
You can also turn this into a solid stability ball workout by performing each drill for 45 seconds to 1 minute and moving through each drill without rest. Then take a couple of minutes and then repeat if able.
I’m a big fan of movement so these drills are great for that.
I hope these drills help you with your BJJ and maybe sparks some ideas of your own!

Core exercises that focus on developing the lower abdominal muscles are key in tying your body together and generating good power when moving.
Different hollow body positions are great for this, with this one being particularly tough. Still need some on this, trying to stop my lower back from sinking down @gmbfitness

Push ups too easy?
You can still work your upper body pushing strength using your body weight with one arm push-ups. Also amazing for your core strength
First time I’ve done these in a while so I’m using the pipe to give my chest something to aim. Over time I’ll use a smaller object to increase the difficulty

DON’T WASTE YOUR WARMUPS…..my Judo sucks (that’s why I’m drilling this), so this is not a technique video, though take idea of using BJJ specific drills to warmup.
It can be another opportunity to sharpen your skills. Pick a weakness, find a way to drill it, then include it in your warmup.

Banded monster walks
Sit down all day at work? Drive or sit on your commute? Then there’s a good chance you’ve got week glutes.
As a #bjj practitioner weak glutes can mean a weak bridge, weak hips and poor movement on the bottom.
This simple looking exercise as part of your warmup will help activate your glutes PLUS strengthen the muscles through your hips and groin, VERY important in BJJ.
If you’re only doing simple up & down movements, this multi directional movement with the hips will make a HUGE difference to how you function.

One key element of strength in BJJ is pushing power and you can still use bodywieght exercises to continually challenge yourself if you increase the complexity of the exercise
Depth plyometric push-ups are a great way to develop explosive pushing power.
I’d recommend using wider platforms than the paralettes to start off with, and first work up to being able to push-up onto the platform before doing this version.

Playing with new ways to develop rotational strength. This simple looking 360 jump is a lot harder than it looks, although is great for building rotational strength, which is key for BJJ.
Make sure you have plenty of room, then try 20 reps with alternate sides, ie, spin left, then right, then left, etc
Don’t be surprised if one side is better then the other.
Focus on: – tight core – rotating the head – picking one solid object in front of your to focus on as you land
Also great for the explosive element.

First things first, this will not replace BJJ practice, although can be great as a supplement to it, especially when you can’t get to class.
I find this is a great way to develop movement patterns, particularly with the hips, that translate directly to BJJ. If you move consistently for 5 minutes plus, it can also be a great cardio workout. Then repeat for a number of rounds.
Just set a timer, move and play to see what movements you develop. You will see a difference in how you move when sparring.
