Please, please, please stop making this mistake when swinging a #kettlebell
Notice how in the first example I’m WRONGLY squatting as I swing. No, no, no. I see this mistake nearly every single day. ???CORRECT form is to hinge at the hip and only allow the knees to bend as a natural result of the swing NOT to lead the swing. You should feel a stretch in the hamstring. Why??
the swing is a glute lead exercise. It’s the hinge that provides the ‘whip’, power and force. Squatting in this way makes it a quad dominate exercise. Trust me, with the amount of sitting we all do, our glutes need as much love as we can give them. A big factor in both #lowerback and #knee pain is weak glutes.

It can be hard to balance weight training and Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. I know that for me, I struggled with it at a point in my life where I was getting bigger and stronger and was chasing numbers in the weight room.
But then struggled with my BJJ training because I was too big and beat up for sufficient rolling and work on the mats.
And in this video I talk about this in the hopes to assist our friend Peter who is a Powerlifter getting into Brazilian Jiujitsu.
He says that since training Jiujitsu he’s noticed that his lifts have dropped in their overall poundage.
And his question is two fold. . .
1. How to Balance BJJ training with his Powerlifting?
2. Should he readjust his expectations for training?
I also touch on the current program I follow for lifting in order to support my BJJ training.
If you’re someone who’s really big into lifting who’s also pursuing BJJ. I hope this video is useful for you and your training on the mat and in the weight room.

This video is part of my soon to be released video e-book on Shoulder Health For BJJ. Its basically the exercises from my e-book in video format. This exercise is a progression of the basic rotator cuff strengthening exercise where the arm is at your side.
This variation is especially important to build healthy shoulders for grapplers and pretty much everyone.
Kimuras, Americanas, and Omoplatas are a few of the submissions that will attack the shoulders in this position of the arm and could compromise and injure the shoulder joint as well as the rotator cuff musculature.
These exercises are a way to help protect the shoulders, build essential strength to promote optimal shoulder function, and also prevent injury.
Doing these exercises does not mean that you should not tap from a submission or get your shoulder cranked, its always a smart idea to tap in order to prevent injury and continue training. But if your shoulder gets compromised and you are late to tap or the submission comes on quicker than expected, then these exercises can help reduce the risk of injury.
This is just one peice of the puzzle to have healthy shoulders, and is a great addition to an already solid healthy shoulder program.
If you are wondering how to get healthy shoulders, then check out my free e-book available now at www.jiujitsutherapist.com and request your free copy today!

1 of 3 gymball games to improve movement for #bjj next video tomorrow.
This game will help improve your balance and ability to adjust your weight quickly when someone is trying to move underneath you in Bjj. The more we train the micro adjustments needed for balance, the better our body will intuitively handle small adjustments on the mat to maintain control of your opponent.
Complete 10 reps without falling off, if you fall off, start again from 0. A fun way to warmup and improve movement at the same time, or when you can’t make it to class.

Small, consistent results, lead to big changes over time. Play the long game.
We can all, myself included, be guilty of wanting instant results. Rarely anything in life worth having is gained in an instant. Particularly for #strength training or #bjj. I see the planche as the ultimate in upper body pushing and straight arm strength. I’ve been working on progressions consistently for ~18 months. So, while this hold looks small, it’s a big step for me to finally elevate under control without the legs supporting the arms. Much further to go, but celebrate the small wins when you get them. It will help with #motivation ???
