The 'Ultimate BJJ Back Attacks': Wings of Victory / Chokes & More!
Ninjas, in this video I bust out a series of gnarly little chokes and arm-bars galore! This little experiment I call, “The Ultimate Back Attack”! Play around with these moves and make whatever adjustments you need to compliment your body size / flexibility, etc. I show a few variations on the choke that work well if you have shorter limbs. Yes, some of these moves do require decent flexibility, but you don’t need to be a yoga master either! Remember, flexibility comes from a daily, disciplined stretching routine. I am more flexible in my mid 40’s than when I was in my early 20’s! Why, because now I stretch every chance I get. I rarely sit in chairs anymore as I would rather be on the floor stretching. Make it a part of your training, not just something you do 5 minutes before you roll. Good Luck and as always, Happy Training!

Jiu-Jitsu 215 lb. Blue Belt tries to smash 170 lb Old Guy Black Belt
Head jiu-jitsu instructor at Dojo Americana/99 jiu-jitsu in Vista, Ca., Mark Hopkins, is a 53 year-old black belt at around 175 lbs. In any given day a larger, stronger and younger guy will walk in my door and want to roll with me. I’ve rolled with guys as large as 350 lbs. It’s no fun, especially if they have some skills. As an instructor, I have to roll with my students, no matter what size they are. I have to represent what jiu-jitsu is all about: a smaller guy defending and overcoming a larger and stronger guy. To do this takes technical skill. And that’s what I have developed over the past 20+ years.
Now Harry isn’t super big, but he outweighs me by almost 50 lbs and is very fit and strong, and he has some grappling skill. In this video I narrate what is going through my mind as we roll. I hope this gives you, the viewer, some additional insight on what one is trying to achieve while rolling. Many beginners often misunderstand the nature of rolling. Many believe and assume while rolling, you must go 100% and go for top position. Although my takedowns are quite good for a jiujiteiro, I often play bottom position. Playing bottom position is the only way to develop a better guard and bottom game. And I feel this is where most people will lose or become defeated, while they are on the bottom.
Dojo Americana represents the NineNine team in San Diego North County. We are located in Vista and have 2 black belt instructors of different styles teaching on our mats, professor Mark Hopkins and Martin Figueroa.

How to Master Jiu-Jitsu – The 2 Most Important Aspects of Training – Firas Zahabi
When it come to learn BJJ there is no faking it, you either get on the mats and show what you can do or you sit on the side lines and talk theory. While theory is important we need to be sure not to get caught up in over analysis and theoretical concepts but rather take as measurements what actually happens on the mat.
Many great and powerful martial arts have over time been watered down so as to appeal to the masses need to move forward in the belt system without having to go through what mastery truly requires. This has happened in many arts and is slowly also happening in BJJ. Luckily BJJ is not an easy art to fake or water down since sparring is still very much a central theme. Still many schools are feeling the pressures of giving out more strips and belts to keep memberships flowing. This puts a the BJJ community in a difficult situation, water down or loose members to those who do.
All this to say that be careful when choosing and instructor, this is the first important decision you must make on you road to mastery. The second most important decision is to cultivate an attitude of learning. When you go in the practice room go to learn and not dominate. Mastering BJJ entails for the most of us getting your ass kick for close to a decade before achieving the status of black belts. If you are to sensitive and you go into a negative downward spiral overtime you get tapped out you will no survive the journey. Instead focus you attention on what you have learned and not whether you dominated or not.
