Some people call it cross side, side body or side control. It’s essentially all the same. It’s a pinning position with many different ways to pin the person flat on their back while using their weight and position to control and attack their opponent. It can be difficult to escape when your are flat but there are some easy escapes when your opponent tries to progress their position by going to the mount. These surprise escapes require proper timing to perform to when done right they are my favorite ways to escape.

The ghost escape has been around but I recently made a slight modification to the initial steps of creating space for the cross hip frame. I believe that it takes the escape to a whole ‘nother level.
But you be the judge.

We’ve covered this before but we go into a little more detail in this video on my go to side control framing/escape system. If you’re getting stuck flat on your back in side control, first learn how to survive and breathe. When the attack comes look for opportunities to fill the gap and free yourself so you can make the escape.

Two of my favorite triangle chokes vs the turtle and from the bottom of side control. Check out the Nonstop Jiu-Jitsu book at https://www.grapplearts.com/nonstop-jiu-jitsu-book/ that I co-wrote with BJJ black belt world champion Brandon ‘Wolverine’ Mullins: this book covers everything from fundamental movements and their applications to advanced open guard attacks and combinations.
Filmed in January 2020.

This is my basic way of setting up frames in side control. Everything starts with survival. Breath and wait for the right opportunity.

Being on the bottom of side control when your opponent has heavy crossface pressure is terrible. Here Rob Biernacki (check out his BJJ Formula at https://www.grapplearts.com/formula) show you how to recover your base, posture and structure, nullify the cross face, and escape from side mount.

What is the best way to escape a Scarfhold style side control in BJJ?
This is the Brazilian Jiu-jitsu question from Jack on Instagram. And in this video I share a way to escape the Scarfhold type Side Control position that comes up often.
The Scarf Hold position is also considered a modified version of Kesa Gatame can be tough to escape if you aren’t familiar with it.
The way you escape Scarfhold will vary from a traditional Side Control.
In this video I try to explain some of the differences to give a better idea as to how to escape when faced with this position in Brazilian Jiujitsu.
I also show a escape to Armbar. The Armbar can happen when you’re opponent doesn’t let go of the arm that’s got an Underhook.
If you training Brazilian Jiu-jitsu and are having trouble with this position. Hopefully this video is helpful!
Thanks!
