Weâve seen some recent examples in grappling of people using techniques that test both legal and ethical limits.

This Brabo Choke is a fantastic option from the Full Guard in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.
The Brabo Grip itself is excellent for posture and Full Guard control. And it leads to numerous sweeps and submissions.
I often show the Brabo grip early on to my White Belts because it’s strength can often be helpful for a newcomer to BJJ who wouldn’t mind a little added control.
In this video I’m not going off a viewer request. Instead, I wanted to simply show you a nice Brazilian Jiujitsu technique that might be useful for your game.
As you’ll see in the video. I show the basics of how to open up the Gi to achieve the grip. Then discuss how to setup the choke or use it for positional dominance.
I hope that the technique helps you with your Full Guard submission game in BJJ.

Have you ever not received credit for something when you felt like you should have? Perhaps you helped someone but then never received any recognition.
That’s what’s going on in today’s Brazilian Jiu-jitsu video.

Our friend Jay who is a 4 stripe Blue Belt has taken upon himself to help out one of the White Belts in his gym with a Baseball Choke technique he’s developed.
And it worked! The BJJ White Belt took the technique and has been able to hit it several times in tournaments and in training. So much so, that this White Belt has become synonymous with this choke.
The only problem is that he has never given Jay any credit for the help.
Jay knows that he shouldn’t feel upset about this. But he says he’s found that it frustrates him.
In this video I draw some parallels to how I felt as a young Brazilian Jiujitsu coach and Jay’s situation.
And I talk about not giving people help in any situation on a conditional basis if you’re really trying to help them.
I also discuss how to turn this negative situation on the mats into a positive by channeling the negative energy into a positive by teaching more people.
But the biggest idea I try to share in this video is that if you take on the role of a teacher or coach in Brazilian Jiujitsu. You need to take joy out of teaching someone. Not getting recognition for it. Finding joy in someone else’s success.

I recently got a question from a BJJ practitioner who is at a new gym and is struggling with her ranking.
She says that she’s a 3 stripe White Belt. But her BJJ training has been broken up a bit. And she also says that this particular Brazilian Jiu-jitsu gym is very tough.
Her question is how to deal with the feeling of false advertising when she’s in the gym with her belt.
She has 3 stripes on her White Belt but she doesn’t feel like a 3 stripe BJJ White Belt.
In this video, I talk about a situation where I felt very similar as a Brown Belt.
I had gone down to train at a really tough gym and by the end of the 1st night I felt like I was being an imposter.
But I was able to get over the mental block and make the most of my time by taking on the mindset I did when I was a fresh new BJJ White Belt myself.
I hope this video is useful for you if you’re in a situation like this. Where you go to a Brazilian Jiujitsu gym and feel like you don’t measure up.

Everyone who’s trained BJJ has probably at some point experienced technique overload.
You know what the is right? It’s where you have so many techniques that you don’t even know where to start focusing.
I think this is an especially big issue with White Belts in Brazilian Jiujitsu.
Our friend Sean ran into this overload issue while looking up BJJ techniques.
He said he was looking up De La Riva techniques and there was just so many different techniques and positions that he was just lost.
In this video I talk about the approach of two BJJ White Belts. 1 was myself and the other was a friend of mine who trained with me for several years.
As White Belts in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu we had 2 different approaches. My friend focused on more techniques and had a TON of different techniques.
These two different approaches showed themselves pretty quickly.
When we would roll the two approaches clashed and 1 of us got the better of the rolling.

Today’s question comes from White Belt our friend who recently had a freak accident outside the gym and now has to take 1 month off BJJ training.
He’s super down about it as he’s been making a lot of progress with his BJJ. And he’s wanting to get some exercises that he can use for his down time.
In this video I steer away from this situation a bit. I know that a lot of people don’t want to lose their progress or the skill they gained in BJJ. And with a small downtime, you won’t.
But something more valuable that can come from this period of inactivity is the contrast of not being able to train.
Meaning, when you get back to training and you’re having a bad day, bomb a tournament or whatever. You can go back and think about what it was like to not even be able to train and then be thankful for the opportunity to get out there on the mats. You’re healthy and not injured and there will always be tomorrow.
This is something I picked up when I was younger and really helps give more appreciation to your BJJ training.
Thanks for watching the video!

How do I balance training people for Self-Defense and for Sport Brazilian Jiu-jitsu?
This is the question that I received one of my students who is a newer White Belt.
He’s been training in our BJJ classes at our gym in Louisville, KY. And he’s wondering about the way we approach balancing the training.
In this video I talk about how Brazilian Jiujitsu, Wrestling, Judo and the other combat sports teach people how to fight without always explicitly doing so.
I share a story from my own experience from high school Wrestling where I learned a way of fighting without really knowing.
The main idea that I try to share in this is that Sport Jiu-jitsu and and Self-Defense aren’t so vastly different. The strategic element will remain very similar but the tactical way that we approach it will change.
The tactical change will come about as a means to deal with the strikes, bites, etc that can happen in a fight on the street.
If you have a strong opinion on this subject, I’d love to hear your feedback!
Comment down below and tell me what you think. If you negative criticism. Please be constructive so we can open up conversation.
Thanks for watching!

Recently I had a student who had his very 1st day of Brazilian Jiu-jitsu. But this White Belt’s 1st class almost never happened.
I ended up catching him walking out of the gym doors about to head home. He had his BJJ gi on with his gym bag in hand.
I stopped him and told him to hell with fear, fuck fear.
He had his gi on, he has been wanting to start training and he knows me. So I said, let’s do it!
He came back in the gym and had his very 1st day of BJJ and it went great. And this new BJJ White Belt has trained several times since then. And I sincerely hope he continues to push through.
And I decided to share this story because I receive messages from many of you who are interested in training. But for 1 reason or another. You choose not to.
Many of the reasons you bring up are not legitimate reasons, but rather are reasons cooked up by irrational fears.
When I speak to someone who waited to start Brazilian Jiujitsu. Oftentimes the only regret they have is that they waited as long as they did. It was never regret out of starting.
So if you haven’t started yet but you want to, I hope you find this video useful.

One of my favorite submissions is a shoulder submissions commonly called the Monoplata or Marceloplata.
But I have a different name for it. I call it the Ugly armbar.
I call it this because it sort of looks like the 1st Armbar I did as a White Belt. That 1st armbar I did back in 2003 was really ugly!
And that’s where the name comes from. I call in the Ugly Armbar.
Fun story, I originally figured this move out on my own. I didn’t see it in an instructional or video. Then later on when I was browsing through some Brazilian Jiu-jitsu techniques. I came across Marcelo Garcia showing the technique.
So much for inventing a new move! đ
In this BJJ technique video. I show one of my favorite sneaky setups for this shoulder lock submission, which starts from Side Control goes to mount and finishes.
In this setup I sort of sit up back which gives the illusion to the opponent that I’m off balance. I’ve found that many people take the bait and roll towards me.
As they do this I step over and catch the arm and setup the submission.
I’lll show another setup for this Brazilian Jiu-jitsu technique later on next week.
So whether you call it the Monoplata, Marceloplata or the Ugly Armbar like me. I hope you like the setup!

Getting flattened out in Side Control and being stuck underneath someone can be one of the toughest things to deal with as a White Belt in BJJ.
In the video a 6 Week White Belt is having this exact problem. He’s getting flattened out and crushed underneath larger Blue and Purple Belts.
Now as I express in the video. If you’re a BJJ White Belt and you’re against a Blue or Purple Belt in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.
There’s probably nothing you can do to deal with it.
Their experience in Brazilian Jiujitsu will typically be too great for you to deal with.
But one of the simple lessons that really makes a big difference when trying to escape Side Control.
Is start by forgetting about the actual escape. And see if you can simply stay on your side.
If you’re on your side, your ability to escape Side Control goes up dramatically.
And I find that my White Belts experience a sharp increase in their ability to escape Cross Side in BJJ by simply focusing 1st on staying on their side.
So if you are experiencing this same issue. My challenge to you is this!
When you’re rolling during your next BJJ class. Just see if you can stay on your side by using the tips described in this video.
Hope the video helped!
