White Belt BJJ Sweeps #2 – Hip Bump Sweep
by
Gary Berger
Today, we will be exploring one of the classic attack sequences from the closed guard. It starts with the hip bump sweep, then switches into two different attacks based on the opponent’s reaction.
It’s been around for longer than I’ve been training. In fact, I learned when I was a white belt. But since then, I have made some small adjustments through years of exploration, teaching, and learning.
Check out the details for each technique, and use them if you wish.

White belts are people, too. These options in this video are timeless, they work at every level, and I think they are great to learn early as possible, so that is why I geared this toward white belts / newer people. The main differences in basic and advanced moves are these:
1. The timing it takes to pull it off
2. The degree of simultaneously moving parts required
3. The sensitivity required to see the opportunity
There are other factors for sure, but those are some of the most crucial. Having said that, the techniques in this video are great for all levels, and I hope the details I point out are helpful. Please like, subscribe and share!

In today’s Bjj technique video I show you 4 fundamental full guard sweeps that every White Belt should learn as early as possible. I call them fundamental sweeps because they’re essential techniques that have useful movements which can be used in a myriad of positions in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. And I say that every BJJ White Belt should learn them early because they can be used to setup combos and other attacks that will serve them well until they’re a Black Belt.
For instance the scissor sweep is a good basic sweep that is great for learning to open your guard and progress to open guards later on in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. The bump sweep is great as a sweep but also is incredibly effective off-balancing technique that can lead to lots of other options in Brazilian Jiujitsu. And each closed guard sweep in this video has the same qualities to it.
Hope the video is useful to you and your training.
Thanks for watching.

The clinch range is such a significant area of the fight, that understanding how to effectively navigate the entry and recognize the energy once there can determine the outcome. Understanding the principles of balance and posture, omg with how to manipulate these principles to your advantage, is a crucial component to the grappling game. In this video, I discuss clinch types and some of the most important concepts to consider once there for effective control and takedowns. For a long time now, the collar drag takedown has been a favorite of mine in the gi. Once you understand the grips, entry and execution of this throw, it is pretty simple to pull off if the timing is there. In this video, I show how I like to set it up and how to deal with what I feel are the most common responses the opponent has to it. I hope you enjoy it.

The shoulder lock known as Omoplata is a powerful tool for the grappling arsenal, and can be not only a submission but also a position of control in and of itself. Navigating this submission on the defensive side can be precarious, and you need technical and well-timed responses to save your shoulder. In this video, I show some considerations for defending and escaping the omoplata based on how late you are in the process.

If you’re working from the bottom of Full Guard it can be super difficult and frustrating to setup techniques against someone who’s simply staying tucked in tight and squeezing. So in this video I’m going to show you a sweep that every White Belt in BJJ knows that can be used as a sweep by itself or as a setup for other options.
In the video I show the basic Hip Bump / Kimura sweep and then show how it can be used as a way to uproot the top person from their tight defensive position. I’ve personally used the kimura sweep to armbar setup in my early White Belt and Blue Belt competitions.
So if you’re up against a tough guard passer who stays tight and defensive then I hope this video is useful to you. I know this idea was super useful to me.

I’m a big fan of advanced basics. I love that concept, because finding the original, basic fundamentals within every position, transition and submission is helpful to understanding how things fit together. So many techniques can get overwhelming without finding those connective elements.
•
This video takes the most basic sweep in jiu-jitsu and follows it to more complicated transitions, setups and submissions. To illustrate this concept, I show the basic hip bump sweep, ways it can fail or succeed, and some cool finishes you can find off it. I hope you enjoy.

Understanding and executing sweeps can be a tricky thing in the beginning…and well after, too. These are possibly the most important sweeps to learn early on, partly because the remain useful and high-percentage, and partly because the are rich in principles that govern all sweeping techniques.
There are multiple variations of these, and hundreds of sweeps from various guards. I focus in this video on these closed guard sweeps only:
1. Elevator Sweep
2. Hip Bump Sweep
3. Scissor Sweep
4. Pendulum Sweep
These are great sweeps by themselves or when combined with each other, other sweeps or certain complementary submissions.
