How to counter the cross face & underhook from bottom Half Guard. Knowing how to defend and escape from this dominant position is a crucial skill for bottom half guard players.
We are going to escape by elevating our opponent and transitioning to butterfly guard or Single Leg X-Guard.

Hip pinning is one of the two most foundational methods of controlling an opponent in side control. Since we often are fighting our opponents legs before we pass the guard, focusing on pinning the hips first makes the goal so much easier as their leg moblity and movment is significantly restricted, and as we pass our ooponents hips already being on the floor makes the finish and control in side so much easier.

For the toughest of opponents with incredible base, you might struggle to get them to off balance. So instead of moving them, move yourself.
As they are trying to pass, use your knee shield to get up to your knees while maintaining your Kimura grip. Once you are sitting tall, you have tons of options. You can fall back into guard, go into the Tomoe Nage, stand up and throw, even rolling into leg locks. As this was the last technique of the class, I didn’t have time to delve into the myriad of attacks available, but as you play with the position I’m sure you will see the possiblities.
The main keys are to stay tall and to avoid exposing your back unnecessarily. Your knee shield is what is keeping them from running around your back, but it can be passed if given time. So you can bait it (working turtle Kimuras), or be first to strike.

Got a lifting question from a viewer recently who asks,
“What’s the best type of lifting for BJJ?”
Now he went on in the message to ask about different modalities of lifting like crossfit, powerlifting and so on. So in the video I share my experiences with everything from crossfit to powerlifting to bodybuilding style workouts and what I prefer now.
Keep in mind that in the video I’m going off my experiences as someone who’s been lifting since he was a teenager. Also, my purposes for lifting as a 37 year old guy are different now than they were when I was a younger competitor. Nowadays it’s for injury prevention and also a little of aesthetics. I share this because this isn’t to say that my answer is right, it’s simply a piece of advice to take in and consider for your own training.
But either way, I hope the video is useful to you if lifting and BJJ is a question you might have.

Leigh’s throwing system for Jiu Jitsu is based on a simple gripping strategy and rolling takedowns that resemble guard sweeps. The intention is that Jiu Jitsu players will be able to utilise familiar skills to get a collar grip and turn someone over from underneath.
This variation of Sumi Gaeshi is a strong option for Jiu Jitsu players as the throw involves sitting into a variation of Butterfly Guard and using similar mechanics to a seated sweep. The footwork to initiate the throw provides a massive amount of momentum, and the grip heavily dominates Uke’s posture, making this throw close to unstoppable. The application within the throwing system is that Tori had the collar grip, and Uke has reached under the arm. There is an option to take the back, but Uke has turned to defend, opening them up for an entry from the front instead.
Leigh is a black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Judo, Traditional Ju Jitsu and Tae Kwon Do. He is a prolific competitor and has competed internationally in martial arts, including the UFC and Polaris. He has won several prestigious competitions, including the NAGA United Kingdom Grappling Championship belt and European IBJJF no-gi gold medals. Leigh runs a Jiu Jitsu and MMA Academy in Wiltshire, UK: http://www.vtjj.co.uk
