Continuing our seminar on guard retention, we show how this basic drill applies on the ground when someone is trying to pass the guard. There are a lot of counter attacks along the way. One of my favorites is the inverted triangle. It offers a bunch attacks and sweeps. We focus mostly on the close side arm.

Continuing from that last technique session, Jake Shields had a question for me regarding standing Kimuras versus a standing opponent. This has become one of my best setups, so I broke down a few ways of attacking from here.
The first thing is the setup. Being able to lock on the Kimura from a back body lock is simple – you just need to create some space between their elbow and your hip. I do this by first working on fighting hands wrestling style using a 2-on-1 break, and when they resist, I slam my hips back into them. This creates a nice pocket that makes it easy to lock on a Kimura. From there, we have many options, from throws, trips, and flips.

In this video, we analyze how to use your tsurite (lifting, power, direction or control hand) as an anchor to steer and control your opponent in order to set him up to throw him.

I had a nice training session with a few studs at Xtreme Couture, Alvin Yeh, Matt Alfonte, and Jake Shields. Afterwards, we sat down and discussed some of the positions we got into, and some stuff Jake was working on technique wise.
The first thing we covered was the Same Side Kimura, which in my humble opinion, is the most powerful Kimura in the game. He was reviewing the technique, and asking about experimenting with setting it up from the back mount, which led to using the TV position, and the leg hook butt roll setup.
Note: The audio isn’t great here, and I apologize for that. It’s a big, busy gym and the acoustics aren’t great, plus the background music it loud. I’m going to get a different mic setup to see if that will help.

November 2021 I had the honor of returning to my friend’s academy to teach another seminar. This one I focused mostly on guard retention with some more advanced counter attacks. We start very basic in this video after an introduction and discussion about our beginnings and history of jiu-jitsu in Ohio.

The Sitting on the Shoulder (aka ‘SOS’) position is essential to incorporate into your omoplata attack game. More at https://www.grapplearts.com/omoplata
Hip cutting is a powerful way to get passed open guards, and particularly the knee shield. By cutting your hips, you are rotating them 180 degrees, which allows you to either roll over or under whatever frame is blocking you. So for a knee shield, we can cut our hips to roll over it by pointing them down.
But it isn’t something you typically do just once. You might pass the knee shield, but he could still frame with his arms, so you can cut again to go under his arms, and again to go over. In fact, you can cut as many times are you need to.
The other good thing about hip cutting is that each cut brings you closer to their head and further from their legs. A good hip cutter is a menace from top. A good example of a hip cutter is Andrew Wiltse. I have seen a few matches from him and the man’s hips move like a tornado, which is one reason why he does so well passing.

The Eagle Claw is probably my most used passing technique these days. It’s easy to grab, but hard to break. I’m not the only one who does this of course. In the past weekend, you could see young champion Tye Ruotolo using the eagle claw constantly while passing the guard.
Why does it work so well? Because when you grip the ankle with the eagle claw, you place your thumb behind their leg by their achilles. This makes breaking the grip hard, as everyone wants to kick forward and not backwards. Plus, by kicking backwards, they open their guard even more.
As a result, you get a rock solid grip that allows you spread them out to pass. For the very wirey and flexible people, you can even lift with the eagle claw, which will turn their hips away from you and give you the pass too.

When working against the knee shield, there is an opportunity to lock up the cradle. The only problem is that usually your opponent is framing so their head is out of reach. But when you start circling with the sprawl pass, you have a good chance to catch their neck.
That’s when the fun begins. You can then use the cradle to work towards the back, all while he is being squeezed the whole time.
