If you saw the recent episode of The Joe Rogan Experience MMA Show #129 with Gordon Ryan & Mo Jassim, you may have caught the clip of Gordon Ryan talking about how his shoulders have gotten so tight from all of the Jiu-Jitsu training, and that he literally has a hard time reaching the back of his head.
In this video, I do a quick break down of what exactly Gordon is talking about, why this happens in Jiu-Jitsu, and how he can fix his shoulder issues for improved shoulder function, shoulder health, and longevity on the mats.
If you’re someone who deals with tight shoulder from Jiu-Jitsu or from a lot of sitting, these techniques will make a huge difference.

In today’s video I answer a question from a viewer who struggles with cardio in BJJ. He says that he’s training hard and doing all the stuff that you would normally do, but he can’t seem to improve his cardio on the mats.
In this video I share a story about 1 of my best friends who started Brazilian Jiu-jitsu with me back in 2003. For several years we basically ate, slept and trained together all the time. Our schedules were nearly identical. But for whatever reason his cardio never improved as fast as mine.
I share why this happened in the video. Now, disclaimer, this may not be the reason for someone else, but it’s worth checking out in case you’re having similar issues as the person asking the question in the video.
Thanks for watching. Chat with you next time.

The hook sweep (also known as the butterfly sweep and/or sumi gaeshi) is the most important sweep in your arsenal against kneeling opponents. It consists of 5 basic steps…
1, Secure your grips (typically an overhook and an underhook)
2, Tuck the foot on your overhook side under your leg on the underhook side
3, Fall sideways onto your shoulder
4, Lift with your hooking leg (which is on the underhook side), and
5, Drive off your bottom leg for more power.
Typically you’re going to end up in side control or broken scarf hold position (aka kuzure kesa gatame) but sometimes you can also go directly to mount.

Check out the hit instructional ‘BJJ for Old F***s’ at https://www.grapplearts.com/oldguard. It’ll help you crush and dominate those younger, stronger, more athletic grapplers who currently ragdoll you on the mat like a grappling dummy!
I recently visited my great friend John Saylor in Perrysville, Ohio at his dojo and home that is known as the Barn of Truth and was able to get in some training while there. It’s called the “Barn of Truth” because you find out a lot about yourself when training in the rugged conditions at the Barn.
