In this video, you will learn one uncommon grip variation for turtle guard, and a few of the attack possibilities that flow from it. The first of which is the no-gi clock choke, but there are some many ways to take the back from it as well.
Also the clock choke isn’t the only submission you can set up with it either.
So check it out if you want to be able to attack turtle guard from more angles.

This series of lapel attacks for closed guard has been in my arsenal for many years. In fact, I’ve even hit several of these finishes in competition. Use this as inspiration for how you can attack in the closed guard using the gi.
Enjoy.

Today we will discuss the neck & arm principle for finishing submissions in Jiu-Jitsu.
I’ll cover subs from side control, from the guard,
All these situations come off of dilemmas. Meaning, I’ll use one submission threat to open up the other.
You can use this great principle with most submissions in Jiu-Jitsu or MMA.
Any position that involves submissions from the arm & the neck can utilize this principle.

Today I’m answering a recent question from a BJJ Blue Belt named Matt, who says he’s having trouble on top of the Mount Position.
Specifically, he’s struggling when his partners are keeping tight “T-rex” arms to their chest, not allowing him to open up any submissions.
With that being said, I’m going to show Matt, and you guys, 2 different ways to deal with really tight arms in Mount.
One of these techniques will be preemptive and the other will be an option for when they’ve already secured their “dino arms” already.
This is a pretty common position in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and since there’s no strikes, like there is in MMA, these are two good options to help you develop some offense.
Hopefully you guys found this video helpful.

Today, we will be exploring one of the classic attack sequences from the closed guard. It starts with the hip bump sweep, then switches into two different attacks based on the opponent’s reaction.
It’s been around for longer than I’ve been training. In fact, I learned when I was a white belt. But since then, I have made some small adjustments through years of exploration, teaching, and learning.
Check out the details for each technique, and use them if you wish.

Being able to finish armbars from closed guard is one of the testaments of skill, in my opinion. So I’m always thinking about ways to do it better. And this transition has come from that lab, with some input from my students.
Try it out and let me know what issues you experience.

Answering a question from Tom on my community page. He was running into difficulty finishing the ezekiel choke when people tuck their chin. So in this video, you will learn how I deal with a few common problems in that situation.

Recently I got a question from a young guy who said he let his BJJ coach down.
He said that this last he’s been competing in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and winning tons of gold medals. He said recently, he was getting ready for a competition, one of the biggest ones in the country and leading up to it his teammates and coaches were very confident in his abilities to have success at the tournament.
He goes out to the competition and loses first round, by 2 points, to the person who would eventually go and win the bracket.
He sends me a message saying that “I let my coach down, what do I do?”
I asked him WHY he believed he let his coach down. His reply was “I did not live up to the expectations everyone had for me.”
So, I questioned him. Asking him, based upon which actions from them, his coaches and friends, made him feel like he let them down.
You might be surprised at his response, and honestly, this is probably how most coaches feel. If you’re ever feeling let down about a loss at a Jiu-jitsu competition, then maybe this conversation between myself and the messenger can be useful to you.

Got a question about how to play Reverse Half Guard (top), so today’s video will show you how and why I use the position in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.
These ideas are fairly basic and fundamental BJJ. So, if you’re a white belt, no worries, this should be pretty easy to understand. That said, I’ve used these techniques against some super tough Black Belts in competition and training.
When showing the Reverse Half Guard position I’ll show the arm in & arm out variations since they’re similar but slightly different.
Also on a side note, this is a position that high school & college wrestlers coming into Brazilian Jiu-jitsu seem to adept to very quickly. So, if you wrestled, maybe this is good position for you to try.
I hope a couple of these ideas are useful ones that you can chew on!

I get a lot of questions about low percentage techniques vs high percentage techniques. I believe this is because people want to avoid putting time into a technique that’s not going to give them good results later on. In this video though I share an idea / a rule for my BJJ about drawing the line in the sand about classifying techniques as high percentage or low percentage.
I share this idea with a story about my early training in Jiu-jitsu and a choke that, back then, was considered a relatively low percentage move. Nowadays, the technique is considered to be a very formidable submission to use in your BJJ arsenal.
Hope the idea gives you something useful to chew on for your BJJ training and technique selection.
