In Victory or in Defeat: Humility Always
On September 27, two Brazilian icons โ Acelino โPopรณโ Freitas ๐ฅ and Wanderlei Silva ๐ฅ โ faced off in a boxing match that ended in a brawl between the teams ๐. Iโm not here to judge, but to highlight a lesson: when humility gives way to ego, everyone loses โ ๏ธ.
This post is a shorter version of one I shared in The BJJ Mental Coach Masters Community.
Sport teaches. And Jiu-Jitsu teaches humility from day one ๐ฅ. One day you shine in training or competition ๐; the next, you leave frustrated, even in tears ๐ข. Thatโs the โhumble pill.โ Tough to swallow ๐, but full of lessons ๐.
Recently, I revisited Brenรฉ Brownโs The Gifts of Imperfection ๐. She reminds us that authenticity is a daily practice that demands courage ๐ช, compassion โค๏ธ, and connection ๐ค. Without humility, itโs hard to show up as your best self โ not just as an athlete, but as a human being โจ.
As I shared in a recent post, I havenโt always lived this way. As a purple belt ๐ช, I once refused to step on the podium after losing a final ๐ฅ. Iโve argued with opponents ๐คฌ and even told a crowd to stay quiet after a win ๐. Looking back, those were moments of immaturity and ego.
I like to think of emotional maturity as a spectrum, from 0 to 100 ๐. No one hits 100 โ unless maybe a monk. But each season of life should move us further along ๐. Ask yourself: where were you at 18? And where are you now?
Humility is what helps you grow on that spectrum ๐ฑ. Itโs what allows you to accept losses ๐, practice self-compassion instead of self-criticism ๐ฌ๐, and extend compassion to your opponents ๐ โ who, just like you, carry their dreams ๐ฏ and sacrifices ๐ฅ.
The Popรณ vs. Wanderlei episode is a reminder: ego can erupt at any level ๐จ. But martial arts call us higher โ to see wins and losses as temporary โณ and to embrace humility as the golden thread ๐งต that keeps you authentic, on and off the mats.
In victory or in defeat: humility always ๐ฅ๐

O esporte ensina, e o Jiu-Jitsu ensina humildade desde o primeiro dia ๐ฅ.
Recentemente, revisitei o livro A Arte da Imperfeiรงรฃo, da Brenรฉ Brown ๐. Ela lembra que autenticidade รฉ prรกtica diรกria que exige coragem ๐ช, compaixรฃo โค๏ธ e conexรฃo ๐ค.
#thebjjmentalcoach #ibjjf #authenticity #jiujitsumindset #bjjmindset #bjjlife
