Having a powerful and versatile guard in jiu-jitsu is a necessity, and without the ability to retain that guard and prevent people from passing it, you won’t have very much success with sweeps or submissions. In today’s BJJ rolling video you’ll see me working from Full Guard. Since we are just getting back to Brazilian Jiu-jitsu training in our gym we are starting with training from Full Guard. Since Full Guard is one of the essential positions in Jiu-jitsu I figured it’d be a good place to start back.
During the Brazilian Jiujitsu training session you’ll see me trying to play from my Full Guard (which isn’t my best position) and using some techniques for guard retention. One of the rolls against my buddy and fellow Black Belt Chris was a back and forth battle. I did manage to catch a couple of submissions and techniques along the way.
Anyways, hope you enjoyed the roll. Feels good to be back on the mats. Hope you are or will be soon too.

Hey guys this video I go over two common guard retention mistakes that mess people up when trying to defend the guard pass. Paying attention to the angle of your hip as well as using the inside arm to frame will make a huge difference in your ability to recenter your hips. One of the essentials for BJJ and function in general is hip mobility.
Having restrictions in the hip and hip pinching can hinder normal daily function as well as multiple aspects of jiu-jitsu.
In this video, I give two basic variations on how to not only stretch the musculature around the hip but also increase space in the hip joint for better hip movement, decreased pain, and for better Jiu-Jitsu.
