NOGI Takedowns can be a problem for a lot of people. The good news is they don’t need to be really complicated to work really well. Having some simple to use takedowns can really help
One of the biggest challenges when starting on the feet in jiu-jitsu is dealing with an opponent’s stiff arms that they use to keep you from executing various takedowns. However, there are many methods that allow us to take advantage of such a situation. Joel Gerson, a judo and jiu-jitsu black belt, shows his way of effectively surprising his opponent with an exuberant takedown and a quick submission.

I decided to upload a bonus video this week with the help of Amy Kilpatrick (RGJJN Brown Belt). This video focuses on common types of pins against a wall: one-hand choke, two-hand choke, double arm pin and headlock style pin. These are some of the most common ways someone may try to pin you against a wall, and the techniques we show here are leverage based ways to defend against these.

Black / Adult / Male / Rooster – Quarterfinal
This is my favorite way to pass the Closed guard l. It’s so much easier as a lanky grappler to just stand up. It eliminates a lot of the grip battles and submissions.
I am so tall that when I stand up most of the time their back isn’t even touching the floor haha making it even harder for them to sweep me.
As long as you keep control of an arm you won’t have much trouble with this break. Some people like to go crossgrip on the sleeve but I don’t do that because I feel it gives an advantage to delariva players

About My BJJ History & My Goal For Bernardo Faria Academy In Bedford – MA (Boston Area)
The message I received said that he was struggling to stay up and keep his balance in no gi. So here is my style of passing. It is a quick in your face I decide the pace of the match style.
First tip is never let someone else be the engager constantly fight grips just like in the gi. Dictate how the match will go by being first or getting a reset until you are first. by moving side to side breaking grips you will be able to see openings and get past the guard easier.
You don’t always have to use the basic bull fighter you can use the side to side motion and mix it in with your other passes you just have to find an opening.
Last tip I will leave you with is this. Most people have a weak side. This is why I go side to side to see which side I will have a harder time with. Find that weak side and cut through it.

This technique was extremely useful to me coming up through the ranks. I actually remember hitting this at blue belt worlds to win one of my matches.
Once you get the mechanics down it is fairly easy to Hit on people.
I used it about five times last night rolling just to refresh myself on the technique. If you have a nasty knee shield or half Guard game this position more than likely has happened to you.

Have you ever wanted to ruin an upper belts day in jiujitsu? Or wanted to make someone go. What the F$@k was that?! Well now is your chance! This Submission sucks to get caught in.
It makes you feel dumb and helpless when you are caught in this submission. Your leg is to your forehead and your somehow in a triangle! How did this happen?! On top of all this it hurts!
Now the first few attempts I did this I lost my position. But once you get the mechanics it’s fairly easy to do. And extremely satisfying to hit lol
You really have to catch the person leaning down for this set up. There are a ton more but this is the one I’ve actually hit live rolling. You can try the one from my funny video “what happens when you mess with white belts” you just have to jump into it risking injury to your partner.
There is also a cool set up from 50/50. It’s the same thing you catch your partner leaning you shoot it up just like a triangle and you have it!

In this video I show a really fun and dynamic pass. I’ve known this pass for awhile, and while I’ve gotten some success out of it, it is important to realize that it not something you should rely on regularly.
Once your opponent/partner gets a beat on you that you like to do this they will be very careful of allowing that top leg to stay straight. This can be a powerful thing in setting up your other passes, as the threat of this is forcing them to continually pump their legs. Make sure you use the threat of this, to set up your other passes.
With that being said, makes sure to watch the video to see the pathway that I take. There is some variance available in the pass, but make sure that you look towards the ceiling and create backwards pressure on the calf while at the same time you’re performing a wrestling shot.
