Recently I came across a video of a teenage BJJ blue belt being slammed by a much larger purple belt. The video (which the Brazilian Jiu-jitsu coach of the gym and father of the teenager posted) shows a video of a much larger guy slamming a much smaller teenager.
Now the situation is unfortunate but it’s a good lesson to observe in the future for yourself should you ever roll with someone brand new. Brand new meaning, new to Jiu-jitsu or just new to your gym.
As I’ll explain in the video I’ve had some unfortunate situations that I learned the hard way. So I’m sharing to hopefully help you not make the same mistake or have the “pleasure” of learning the lesson as bad as some have.

Inevitably, someone will be able to build up to a tripod position and start threatening to pass from the Squeeze Pass. Good timing is important here, as your goal is to take advantage of their hips moving up to push them up higher – allowing you to sneak into a butterfly guard.
Normally you will get your bottom leg (the trapped one) to tuck in first as they lift up, then force the second hook in to score your butterfly guard. If you are flexible enough, you might just be able to sneak in the free leg first. Once you get your butterfly guard, I suggest attacking with a hook sweep on your over hook side, or shoulder crunch on the cross face side.

Sometimes your frame might have a hard time getting reestablished, particularly if they are really top heavy and pressing into you. That’s when a well timed Knee Lever sweep can pay dividends.
The Knee Lever is a simple sweep that involves trapping your opponent’s knee in your half guard, ideally having it on the ground. You are then using use knees to turn hard to the trapped knee, as you use your over hook arm to trap their posting arm, and your free hand to push against their hips.
You don’t need to bridge to make this work, although it can sometimes help if their weight is sitting back to far as the hip bump will get their weight forward. Normally if their weight is back, then they aren’t very tight with you, and you can likely just pummel in the cross face side and get your frames back.

Don’t get caught in head and arm chokes…or any submission, for that matter. But, since it is inevitable that you will get caught, it is important to have late escapes, as well as early ones. This video details the sequence of escapes and the procedure for applying them effectively to counter the head and arm choke.
Always be as safe as possible in training and competition. I hope these details help. Thanks as always for watching!

Once you understand how to frame, then escaping the squeeze pass simply becomes a matter of reestablishing your frames. The problem most people have is that they start the process by trying to get their under hook frame back, and rarely have any luck doing so. That’s because your opponent’s head will be right on top of your shoulder and their chest tight to yours, not leaving any space to pummel in for an under hook.
Instead, you should be fighting for your frame against their cross face. There is much more space to sneak your frame back in, as their arm pit is completely exposed here. Plus, we can use our half guard (ideally a lock down) and some shoulder pulling to get their chest level a bit lower to make the pummel even easier.
