Brian Jones has an extremely impressive set of certifications in the fields of exercise science and strength and conditioning. He’s used this knowledge in combination with his 2nd degree black belt to create training programs that are valuable to any grappling athlete.
Brian discusses these programs as well as his trip to train an obscure form of grappling in Iceland.
Check out Brian’s academy website.

Easy solo BJJ warm-up exercises to get the legs and hips moving using a belt. Use the tension from the belt and feet to move the kips in multiple planes. Feel for restrictions and tightness and gently move into the areas where you feel tight. Spend as much time as you feel is necessary with this technique.

Think bodyweight exercises are not good for building strength? Try these on for size. There are MUCH HARDER bodyweight pushup variations too. This is part of an upcoming BJJ strength course where all you need is 15 MINUTES X 2 PER WEEK to develop incredible strength for Bjj. That’s it. #bjj #strength #jiujitsu

For developing hip drive power/strength I still think #kettlebell swings are the best for #Bjj . You may be able to lift more weight using a deadlift, but the speed you can swing a kettlebell dramatically increases the force you are generating as opposed to a slow lift like a deadlift. Deadlifts are still GREAT, just think kettlebells are better for Bjj due to the fluidity of the movement #thebeast

Try these single arm row variations. Make them easier or more difficult by having body further away or closer to the ground when you start. Great for developing pulling and rotation strength and replicating movements like the arm drag. You’ll be tearing arms off with a few weeks (results may vary ???) #bjj #jiujitsu #strength #power #fitness

Why lift weights when you can lift people?! Besides, throwing weights down is not as much fun as throwing people! Collier Method of Judo!

One of the biggest benefits I have found utilising #gymnastic #strength exercises and how it translates to #BJJ is straight arm work. This is one example on the rings. Forcing the thumbs out and elbows forward, develops strength in the muscles and tissues m that cross the elbow joint. Straight arm strength is something lacking in most strength programs. Yet, for Bjj, our elbow joints take such a beating, so straight arm work should be a must. Not to mention the benefits to the wrist and shoulder joints from holding them in a stable loaded position. Doing this on the rings can be tough, you can start of on a set of dip bars or far more basic variations on the floor in a press-up position

Early morning super, super sets for upper body pulling strength. Tucked horizontal pull, tucked back lever leg extension and upside down curls. They feel as hard as they look…..plenty to work on here #bjj #jiujitsu #strength #conditioning #gripstrength
