Brandon McCaghren is a 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu black belt and the founder of the Professional Grappling Federation. The PGF has gone from strength to strength over the last few years and has evolved into one of the biggest grappling promotions in the world. They now host 3 seasons every year with a total prize pool of $100,000 every single time.
Jits Magazine spoke to Brandon briefly about his personal Jiu-Jitsu journey and what it was like to train under Eddie Bravo from such a long distance away, but most of our conversation was centered on PGF. Brandon shared how he came up with the idea of a Jiu-Jitsu league and why he constantly pushes to improve the format. He also shared exciting and exclusive news about the upcoming PGF World Season 8, along with some crazy plans for the 9th and 10th seasons that will take place later in 2025.

Many side control escapes start with the bridge. And the direction of the bridge will generally be towards the person on top. If done well, it will create enough space for rotation and hip escape.
That’s where this variation on top position comes in.
Stepping up the leg closest to the head as a base will create a structure that is hard to damage with the bridge alone. Also if you wedge the hip between your elbow and knee, there will be limited space for the hips to escape.
In this video, you’ll see a few demonstrations of me doing a few situationals in top position using the variation.
The intent on my side was to see how long I could hold him while expending the least amount of effort. And there is also one particular moment where I went for submissions.
Enjoy.

Today we’ve got a question from Edgar, who asked me “Which option is better for real self-defense cases, Gi or No Gi BJJ?”
While reading the comments, many people swayed hard to one side or the other.
The Gi people said their version of BJJ was the best, while the No Gi Jiu-Jitsu players said their side was more practical.
One team says you’ll never fight naked people, and the other says you can’t rely on the grips of the Gi in real life.
There’s a ton of dogma around it and I’ll illustrate to you guys what I think about this with a particular hypothetical situation.
Hopefully, you found this video helpful.
Thanks for watching.
