Tightness and stiffness in the ankles can be a significant limitation in your squatting mechanics and specifically squatting depth, it can effect your ability to sit back and maintain proper posture when in your opponent’s closed-guard, and also be a factor in how well you can use your feet as “hooks” to control your opponent during training.
Having a thorough and complete approach will check the boxes to ensure that you address the tight muscles, improve joint mobility in the ankle, and also begin the process of maintaining your new ankle mobility by activating the muscles and strengthening in your newly obtained range of motion.

Hip tightness and pinching in the hip joint can be a limiting factor in movements such as squatting or when getting into specific jiu-jitsu positions as well.
I started using the “Bear Crawl” position with a band to address this issue. This technique is great because it addresses the hip joint on multiple levels.
First the joint moves through its available range actively, then the mobilization band is used to focus on the hip capsule addressing the “joint glide,” as well as to create additional space in the hip joint to give clearance from the tissue pinching up into the capsule, and third the muscles surrounding the hip are activated allowing the muscles to fire and wake up which provides for a more complete and thorough technique that actually works well and quickly.
Here is a link to some monster bands that work pretty well https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00NAPYKRG/ref=as_sl_pc_qf_sp_asin_til?tag=jiujitsupt-20&linkCode=w00&linkId=c65b1520d9eaf4232acf670de775d708&creativeASIN=B00NAPYKRG

The Airplane exercise has been something I have incorporated into my training and has definitely been one of the exercises that has helped “unlock” and “wake up” my hips.
Performing exercises like this that are dynamic, engage the muscles, and work on control and balance are extremely beneficial.
If you are a BJJ practitioner, athlete, or if you have a job that requires you to sit a lot during the day this movement is a a very important exercise to incorporate.
Use it as a warm-up, recovery exercise, or even for you rehab of the legs.
I like 1-2 sets of 5-10 reps, but these numbers will change based on the goal I am trying to achieve.

Rib injuries are one of the toughest and most difficult injuries to recover from.
The ribs are effected by and also impact so many other areas of the body and the lack of mobility and strength in this area can really limit performance and can lead to future injuries.
In this video, I take you through one of my favorite and in my opinion an extremely beneficial and effective exercise sequence to help with improving movement and strength.
This is a solid technique for a warm-up exercise or a rehab technique.
2-3 sets of 10 repetitions

In this video, I demonstrate the use of Kinesiotape (stretchy tape) for swelling control.
I recently sprained my ankle and had some associated swelling with the injury.
I used this taping technique to assist with promoting swelling reduction.
Its a really simple and in most cases an effective technique to help with the recovery process.

In this video I answer a Youtube question about a knee injury that has limited the amount of bend in the knee. I discuss any whether there are some dangers in training without full knee motion.
I also talk about a few positions to avoid as well as position to use if you have limited knee bending and a really effective technique that can help improve knee bending (aka knee flexion).

In this video I go over an article that discusses different postures for recovery.
The article compares recovering from High Intensity Interval Training (H.I.I.T) with using a hands on the head posture (as most of us have traditionally performed) versus a hands on the knees posture.
I break down which posture seems to provide for better recovery (specifically heart rate recovery), why heart rate recovery is an important indicator of your fitness, and what I recommend you do to improve your recovery between rounds.

The “90-90” position is one that I have found to be one of the most beneficial for Jiu-Jitsu.
Simply, it checks A LOT of boxes. This position can improve internal and external rotation, protects the hips, knees, and even the low back from injury, and will make your S-Mount in BJJ better in your ability to safely get into the position, maintain position, and go for submissions from the position.
In this video we work primarily on the back leg which can be focused on working the Internal Rotation component of hip mobility.
We start with a basic stretch, then a muscle activation exercise, and end with the most difficult portion where we hover the hip and not only activate the muscle around the hip, but get a dynamic stretch as well.
This position is also one that I delve into in my new course “Grappling-RX – Optimized Hips.” Find out more about my brand new course at https://www.grapplingrx.com/optimizedhips

Knee injuries are common among all sports and especially in BJJ.
If you have ever injured your knee or are dealing with a knee injury and not sure what to do or just want to learn more, this video is for you.
In this video I discuss what a meniscus is and what it does in the knee, the types of tears, whether the meniscus can heal, the types of surgeries, and whether you should have surgery.
This video is for educational purposes only and should not be used as medical advice. Contact a medical professional to get an evaluation or assessment for treatment.
