Is there a position you can get into where when you are being crushed…you can be safe (relatively), regain your breath and wait for a (very likely) opening for you to regain control? well, the Pillow Defence might be such a position. And therefore a must for anyone’s game. Check out this video. It is super easy to execute. Try it on the mat and let me know how it goes…

Initial thoughts on the Bauerfeind Sports Knee Support and Genutrain Knee Brace. These are two of the best knee braces for grappling. The feel, support, compression, and fit are important as these braces stay in place with grappling and don’t restrict movement.
Check out the braces here: http://www.shareasale.com/r.cfm?b=706061&u=1416655&m=58066&urllink=&afftrack=

This is a fantastic footlock that is still legal at whitebelt level in competition.

One of my favourites passes. And a pass that is taught very early on to my white belts. This video teaches some very basics with some simple ideas to be aware of so you can execute this effectively. Done correctly this can become a mainstay of your Jiu Jitsu guard passing game. Check out the video, try it on the mat and let me know how you go…

This is one of my favorite sweeps – The Leg LASSO CATAPULT Sweep! Why? because it also involves one of my favorite guards the spider guard. With a few tweaks, you can grab a sweep that is very difficult to defend and enormously effective. Watch this video, try it out on the mat and let me know how you go….

This is a review video of Daniel O’brien’s Darce counter that he posted about a week ago. I was skeptical at first as were many others on Facebook when he released this smooth looking counter to the Darce choke. I respect Dan’s skills a lot and told him I would investigate further and realized the genius of his technique. I wanted to add my preferred finish to the escape as well as let Dan know that I truly appreciate his contribution to our grappling/bjj world. Thank you Daniel O’Brien.

If someone were to ask me the pass that I use the most. The pass that I use at the highest level. Then this might just be the one. Not because it is tricky or hard. But because it is simple AND super effective. By the end of this video, you will be able to do it as well. Try it out on the mat and let me know how you go.

The Fireman’s Carry is a popular throw, particularly in wrestling. This setup and follow up seems a little more accessible for me (a jiu-jitsu guy with novice wrestling), because of how tricky it is.
The setup involves faking (or actually reaching for) a high crotch or ankle pick, turning the opponent’s reaction into an opportunity for an arm drag, and using that arm drag to enter for the cross-side Fireman’s Carry.
To follow up the throw, I’m choosing a topside crossover transition when the opponent scrambles to face me. This gives a good route to the back take, especially when you use a Kimura grip to secure your connection to the opponent.
But mostly, this is just a damn fun technique series to drill. Enjoy!

This series of heelhooks is really starting to get into some great detail. As mentioned before, there is great reward for careful viewing. You will not be unhappy for taking the time. Heelhooks are increasingly important in a grappler arsenal. You need to know how to execute them and defend them. Check this video out and let me know what you think…
