A few years back, I noticed Rafael Lovato Jr finishing a lot of cross chokes from mount with a uncommon grip configuration. Afterward, I immediately started exploring its mechanics, and I’ve realized that the double palm grip has some unique benefits.

A basic concept that is extremely useful for injury prevention by limiting overuse injuries, improving your BJJ, and improving longevity in the body is known as “rotating the tires.”

This is not anything new but its a great concept to think about as it can force your opponent into a position or side they aren’t as comfortable from, it will distribute the load on your body and help maintain symmetry, and it will limit overuse injuries.

Technical mount is a kneeling mount variation of the mount that is potentially more dangerous than standard mount as your opponent has closer access to take your back and you have less defenses. Depending on his posture and energy, your survival and escape strategies have to be appropriate in order to be effective and efficient.

These are the best escapes I have come across and use frequently over the years. Nothing is perfect, but I haven’t seen anything that keeps you safer and gets you out more efficiently and faster than these four options. Each option is contingent on what space the top opponent is allowing you to have.

If you can find a submission in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu or any other grappling sport that’s more devastating than this one, I gotta see it. I’ve seen a ton of variations, but never seen anyone lock the body triangle and take the head like this. If you’ve got footage of this from another source, send it to me.

This is what we call the Executioner, and it’s an absolute spine ripper. I originally learned it from my friend Scott “einstein” Epstein. He’s also a 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu Black Belt under Eddie Bravo, and he has served as one of my mentors over the years. He calls this the Epstecutioner, but I call it the Executioner to bother him mostly. I’ve heard lots of names for some variations of this over the years: Dragon Sleeper being the chief among them.

In my opinion, these are the most important techniques for a White Belt in BJJ to know.
Every instructor has their priorities but for me, beginners in BJJ should focus the majority of their training on dealing with real world attacks and not on defeating other BJJ player’s attacks.
