While transitioning from a striking sequence to a wrestling entry is solid, it’s even better to interrupt your opponent’s striking with a well timed take down.
First, your opponent’s weight will be off balance when you get them to commit to a strike. Second, their hands will be out of position to defend and often so will their body.
In this case, we are simply slipping a jab and immediately closing the gap to a nice double leg entry.

Getting take downs in MMA is not easy. Nowadays, every fighter knows how to manage distance, has cage awareness, and can sprawl and dig under hooks well enough.
If you expect to force a pure wrestling game in MMA, 9/10 you are going to have a bad time. Instead, you need to be a true Mixed Martial Artist and blend your striking with your wrestling.
A simple example is using a jab to setup a double leg take down. We pump out a few jabs to establish our range, and get our opponent to respect the jab. More importantly, we want to draw their hands up to defend by either blocking or catching our jab.
Once we can see that, then we know their hands are going to be high, so we can shoot behind our jab with no impediment to our take down. Simple, easy, and effective.

Alvin was asking about a Guillotine attack Gordon Ryan used against Keenan Cornelius in their ADCC 2017 87.9kg finals match, so we worked through it together.
Initially, I mistook the side Gordon tripped on, as I tripped to the trapped arm side. While this still works as a trip, it is much better to trip towards the head. Reason being, you will have more choke pressure as you are folding his head into the choke.
Regarding the finish, in my case, I’m able to just turn sideways to get on top. However, depending on the scramble, you may need to backward roll, like Gordon did to Keenan, to get the mounted guillotine position.

Today’s video is a short conversation with Andy Stumpf. This video was originally filmed back in 2020. I’m just now posting it (nearly 1.5 years later). Got lost in a hard drive somewhere.
Anyways, there is an idea that Andy has shared on his podcast and others he’s done about how to deal with overwhelming situations. It’s something I’ve naturally done in my life but the way he articulates it is useful in my opinion. So with that I wanted him to share it on the channel with you.
So enjoy the conversation with Andy and I. And if you like it, check out some of the links. Either to his podcast channel, website or even the podcast I did with him back in 2020.

One of my favorite positions to finish a guillotine from is the half guard. A lot of people mistakenly believe that you can’t finish a guillotine from half guard. That is only half true. 🙂
If you have the head on the side of your body where you leg is trapped, then you are in the money. Not only do you have a strong finish because of your hip angle, but you also have easy sweeps here too.

If you’ve played Half Guard long enough then I’m sure you’ve experienced the situation where you get smashed by the person on top squeezing you. It happens to all of us.
Well, in today’s BJJ technique video I’m going to show you how to escape a tight half guard position and get unstuck by using the Lockdown position (most commonly known from 10th Planet) to get the person off balance.
I’m also sharing this position in part because I know a lot of beginners in BJJ (White and Blue Belts) find themselves in this position naturally and don’t know how to use it.
Hopefully the off-balancing technique is useful to you and helps you be more effective from Half Guard with your Brazilian Jiu-jitsu.
Thanks for watching the video.

I had my friend, fellow black belt Alvin Yeh, come by my place to help get prepared for the upcoming ADCC Trials here in Las Vegas. We were going over a few key positions, with one of them being the guillotine choke.

In today’s video I share a simple breathing exercise to try the next time you’re rolling in your BJJ gym. It’s a simple idea that can help you slow down your pace, not be so pazzy (if you’re a white belt) and even help you out last someone else.
I started doing this type of breathing back in 2018 after reading a couple of books that got recommended to be from a friend. And initially it was a struggle to breathe in the way I talk about in the video. But now after doing it for several years it’s much more natural and I’ve noticed it’s given me a clear advantage of my opponents in competitions and some of my training partners in the gym.
Hope the video is helpful to you. And good luck with trying the exercise the next time you roll.
