Technique or strength? Which one is more important? This is a big debate that goes on in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu where people will tout technique as KING and that strength doesn’t matter. Where others, like myself, encourage the development of strength and athleticism in the body to improve their BJJ.
In this video I talk about the myth or misconception that is spread through Brazilian Jiu-jitsu that strength doesn’t matter. I do my best to dispel what I believe are hindering ideas.
This comes as a question from our friend Matthew who isn’t training yet. And while I do answer the question I try to use it as an opportunity to encourage all of you to keep your body healthy and strong. Don’t ignore your physical being for technique training only.
If you’re body is weak, broken or in bad shape. All the Brazilian Jiujitsu training isn’t going to be helpful.
Hope you enjoyed the video and thanks for watching!

If there’s one thing that the Atos crew knows… it’s how to pass. Anything. So if you’re facing a great guard player, you might want to check out some of our favorite passes… like this one! Check out the video below to see Atos black belt Dominique Bell show the “crazy dog pass” to a back take!

Guard Recovery Fundamentals Digital Course: https://guardrecoveryfundamentals.com/
If your guard keeps getting passed like a hot knife through butter, then Guard Recovery Fundamentals is for you!
The first ten lessons are about how to maintain and recover your guard in a self-defense scenario. This is the foundation for the whole course, and it was passed directly to me by my coach, Fabricio Werdum.
I’m very proud to be teaching these drills because there are not many people in the BJJ community who are aware of them.
Also, if you have wife and kids that don’t train Jiu Jitsu, then this is the perfect introduction to the art. Not to mention that these are real life-saving skills!
We will then move to the sport Jiu Jitsu and talk about the main differences between the two, especially regarding the distance management/control.
You will learn how to establish safe grips, safe guard, and when necessary recover against the most common passes, like the knee-slice, over-under, leg drag, long step, double-unders, and stack pass.
Last but not least we will go over the Cocoon position, which is the foundation for an impenetrable defense. When things go wrong and your guard gets passed, the Cocoon is the place to stay until it’s time to recover again.
Most of the escapes originating from the Cocoon are gonna go through the turtle position, so the final part of the series will cover in-depth that aspect of the game.

This is one of my favourite armlock set ups from the Closed Guard.
For me, it’s much harder to escape or defend because I don’t open my legs as much and he can’t use his other arm to help protect his trapped arm.

Never be the dog chasing the car…It is valuable advice I try to always remind students. You never want to chase a position or find yourself in one where you don’t know what to do next. This can be especially frustrating when you have worked hard and accomplished a great arm locking position, but you are having trouble finalizing it. That’s where this video comes it.
There are a ton of ways to finish the arm lock, but this video contains a few of my favorites that I find to be helpful, high-percentage and fairly easy to employ. Among the ones included are:
– Wrist Release
– Pull to Unlock
– S-Mount Switch
– Arm Crush Northside
– Pressure Lock Option
– Arm Crush Southside
– Wrist Push Unlock
– Triangle Choke Transition
– Vice Break
– Arm Drag to Back Take
– Reverse Triangle with Kimura
