How intense should your BJJ training be inside the gym when you’re wanting to prepare for a Brazilian Jiu-jitsu competition or possibly MMA? This is today’s question.
In this video I touch on the topic of intensity 1st and the idea that you can’t really know the intensity of training until you experience it in person.
When you compete you essentially have a license to fight another person in the agreed upon rules and it’s completely ok. This isn’t true anywhere else in society.
I experienced these conditions in Wrestling tournaments, Brazilian Jiujitsu competitions and MMA fights. And I can tell you that from my personal experience, when you’re competing you’re tapped into an intensity that just isn’t present in normal conditions.
At the very least it’s hard to do.
From there I briefly talk about how you might prepare for a competition using a mixture of intense and lighter training to allow the body to recover.
I hope you enjoy the video!

It’s one thing to get to the back… but can you finish from there?! Attacking from the back puts you at the greatest advantage in a jiu jitsu match, but sometimes it’s not that easy to maintain it long enough to submit your opponent… especially if he/she knows how to escape. Check out the video below to see one way multiple-time ADCC and World Champion Andre Galvao maintains the back and executes four different submission options!

A “Double Take” is attacking with the same technique twice (or more) in a row. In this video, we show how to throw your opponent with Ippon Seoi Nage (1 Arm Shoulder Throw) as a double take if he hops around your initial attack.

Staying safe in the closed guard is hard. There’s all kinds of threats like cross chokes, scissor sweeps, and kimuras just to name a few. These simple rules for white belts can help though.

Here is an effective and sneaky application of Ude Gatame (Straight Armlock) as a counter against an opponent’s spiral ride. Not only do you get out of trouble from the ride, but also catch him with an armlock.

In this video I show a Oma Plata escape that leads into Back Mount that you can use in BJJ. I recently hit this in one of our rolling videos from a Brazilian Jiu-jitsu training session we had and I received a question about how I used the technique.
In the video of our rolling, which is clipped into the video, I got caught in a triangle choke position. Then after escaping the triangle my student switched to an oma plata submission. I countered this by hopping over and then getting into the back mount position.
If you’ve followed me for anytime then you know my Brazilian Jiujitsu style is all about getting to the back. I’m always trying to find a way to make it to back mount because I find it to be one of the best position for my game personally.
I hope you enjoy the escape / counter and hopefully it will help you with your own training.
