Sometimes, our opponent will dig their legs into the ground when you pull them into you, which can give them a good post to block the sumi gaeshi, and also make it hard to hit the rocking chair sweep. That’s when we can abandon the body lock and collect their legs for a simple back sweep.
The key here is to make sure you use your butterfly hooks to draw their legs into you as close as possible. However, even if they are able to make a strong base, we can switch from the simple double knee thrust back sweep into a powerful double foot kick sweep.

If the sumi gaeshi doesn’t pan out, no worries. We can switch gears and work into the rocking chair sweep. This is a great option against a good defender when you couldn’t eliminate their posts. Rather than taking them to a side, we are going to run them over. The keys to this sweep is to create momentum and get a strong base leg to stand up on.

We had this video sent to us by roughly 100 different people. For most viewers the natural reaction is to scrutinize the officers in the video, and while their actions are unacceptable and we agree they should be held accountable, for us what appears in the video is not the cause of the problem but rather the symptom of fact that most officers in America get less than 4 hours a year of hands-on control tactics training (in fact in Arkansas, where this took place, the State has a ZERO HOUR annual requirement for police officers once they graduate from the police academy). At some point the blame for putting disastrously undertrained officers on the streets needs to land on the command staff and the politicians responsible for setting the minimum training requirements. When they are confronted, they’ll say budget cuts won’t permit the increase in training, but the published data now shows that better trained officers actually save the agencies more money (in reduced workers comp claims due to fewer Officer injuries) than what it costs to train the officers to begin with – so better training actually pays for itself! Not to mention the additional savings that comes from the reduction in excessive force lawsuits when you have a 53% reduction in serious injuries to civilians who interact with Jiu-Jitsu trained officers.
Share if you agree that it’s time for a change.

Back in 2005, I had a match in Grapplers Quest with Luke Stewart, a notable brown belt at the time. I noticed he tried to sweep me with a body lock from his guard, and had me in some trouble. Fortunately, my wrestling base allowed me to defend it and I went on to win that match.
But, I always study my matches the next day. So I watched, and saw what he was doing. I hadn’t seen anyone else try this before, and I started working on it. Soon enough, I was able to adjust it and make it work exceptionally well, and even came up with a series of sweeps from the guard body lock.
The first is the one he tried to get me with, the Sumi Gaeshi. What makes this body lock position work so well is that you are going to cinch up your opponent’s arms over their head – eliminating their posting arms. We then work a little leg magic to sneak in a butterfly hook and voila – sweep city. We can then take advantage and get a high mount and work right into an arm bar.

This system of stepping in between my opponents legs and creating a split pressure on their hips is one of my favorite methods of passing the open guard. When you can establish the inside space on your opponent it is impossible for them to create any attacks and you force them to respond by having to deal with the splitting pressure on their hips. This often forces them to give you opening for different passing sequences.
