How to easily tape your finger for BJJ.
by
Gary Berger
Today’s question is about spazzy White Belts who are ripping submissions.
The question comes from Christian who is newer to BJJ, but his biggest worry is about rolling with other White Belts who finish submission too quickly.
He asked, “is this a valid concern? or is this something I need to get used to?”
Of course, White Belts are going to be a little spazzy, but this definitely IS a valid concern.
In this video I’ll explain to you how I’d approach training safely as a White Belt in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu against other White Belts in BJJ, and how to train safely in general, regardless of belt rank.
Hopefully you find these Ideas useful for you.

Today’s question comes from Marshall, and MMA fighter, who sends me a message saying that his MMA coaches, BJJ coaches, etc., are talking him up and telling him that he has a toughness about him that most people don’t have naturally, that he’s very skilled, etc.
He says that he knows his coaches believe what they’re saying. The issue is this…
He doesn’t see it.
He asked me “How do you discover something about yourself that other see, but that you don’t necessarily see in yourself?”
In this video I go into a few stories about times in my life I felt like an imposter, and no matter what anyone told me I didn’t believe I had “IT”, just like Marshall.
If you’re feeling like Marshall, I’ll also give you a really simple way to “update” your identity a little faster, so that you can see what your coaches are seeing & so that you can develop a real superpower, SELF TRUST, that is often developed by going through certain tough situations whether that’s through training Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, Wrestling, MMA Fighting, etc.
Hopefully you find the ideas in this video useful for you.

A friend of mine once said, “the only techniques you know are the ones that you can execute live.”
I’ve known so many people that try to learn every technique under the sun but most of those are irrelevant if you can’t make them work.
The better plan is to build a system and constantly work to refine it only adding techniques that fit into that system.
Then, the battle plan is to funnel them into your system. The way I explain it to my students is “You don’t have to be great at Jiu-Jitsu, you have to be great at YOUR Jiu-Jitsu. And, then make your opponent fight in the arena of your Jiu-Jitsu.’
But, again, rather than learning a lot of random techniques to convince myself that I am very knowledgeable I’m more focused on expanding or refining my system.
The first clip is a technique I use a lot because it’s vital if you play guillotines to stop an educated opponent who understands he needs to pass to the safe side.
And, I still use it all the time. But, because I use it all the time I was able to work out one of the weaknesses of it.
And, that is if I’m really working to drive his head down from the Butterfly guard for a more effective choke then my hooking leg becomes weak and it’s harder to keep connected to his leg.
Therefore, it’s harder to keep the hook and sweep him if he then jumps to the safe side.
So, I’ve developed some techniques to deal with this.
In the second clip, you can see one that I use.
I use my back leg to block and catch his leg so that I can reinsert my hook and complete the sweep.
This is why it’s important to develop your own system and then work to constantly explore it and increase its effectiveness.
Then your combative goal is to learn how to funnel your opponent into your system.
This is a far better use of your time than learning all the “best” techniques from a bunch of random systems which don’t actually fit together.
One final note to understand my system here. Often after, I sweep, I will post my foot on their hip and elevate my hips. This allows me space to readjust my grip and to use gravity into the choke.
But, Frank here is incredibly strong and was doing a good job hand fighting. So, I concede the reversal because I knew that he’d have a harder time fighting my hands on bottom and because he’d have his hips elevated which would mean I could easily sweep him and get back on top if I wanted.

This morning I was talking to one of my Brown Belts, Tim, and he was telling me that this idea he adopted of “old man” Jiu-jitsu was getting in his way and creating some problems for him in training.
In my honest opinion, I believe that this idea of “Old Man” BJJ is a bit BS and even a bit restrictive.
This all comes from a recent story of this “older” Brown belt, Tim, rolling with one of our black belts, Mark, who has an insanely difficult guard to pass.
Tim felt like his “Old Man” BJJ style was not working against this specific type of guard. But, Eventually Tim breaks the rules and try’s some “Young Man” BJJ & a looser style of passing.
He stands up and he starts trying to pass side-to-side to get through the guard instead of smash passing low.
When Tim does this, he notices that he starts to get reactions out of the younger Black Belt, and although he couldn’t finish the pass, he felt like made a ton more progress in the roll.
In this video I’ll talk about the downside of putting a label on your BJJ as it relates to your age (like Tim did here), your weight, height, etc., and how far too often we rely on these labels to search for SIMPLE solutions to complex problems.

Long lost episode! Rolled Up #28 was filmed back on 2011 and for some unknown reason was never released and was thought lost for ever.
We recently discovered it while going through the Budo vaults.
This episode was filmed at the grand opening of Romulo Barral’s school in Northridge, CA and featured not only Romulo but his wife, Roberto Tussa Alencar, and Samuel Braga.
There are a few minor audio issues but it’s still a fun episode with some g
