John Baker is a former professional baseball player who spent seven years in the major leagues. John is a blue belt in jiu-jitsu and he is the Mental Skills Coach for the Chicago Cubs.
A large part of John’s work is teaching mindfulness and meditation practices to athletes. He is trained in Mindfulness Based Attention Training (MBAT) and He has also completed the first level of UCLA’s MARC Mindfulness Program.

Recently I had 2018 IBJJF World Champ Mahamed Aly out to our gym to train and do some videos.
In this video Mahamed shows a series of slick submission options when you’re having trouble finishing the Armbar from top position.
These submission options not only give you the ability to finish the roll or match. But they also allow you to have greater control and make your opponent super uncomfortable.
The slicer he put me in was awful! And the collar choke he used was no nicer! both of the submissions were brutal!
I like this video because it’s several simple BJJ techniques from a common position.
I think everyone who has done Brazilian Jiujitsu at some point has struggled to finish an Armbar.
And make sure to stick around for the end as Mahamed and I share a few thoughts about training and developing a deeper more complex Brazilian Jiu-jitsu game.

I remember the first time I did the ROPE drill quite well. One of my training partners, Efrain Ruiz, introduced me to it. He seemed to do it with some struggle, but nothing major. When I finished 5 rounds of it though, wow – my legs turned into jello.
It is pretty self explanatory from the video, but you do sets of 10 of jumping left to right, forward and back, and left to right followed by a sprawl to go under the rope. The next set you can start from right to left on your side ways jumps to balance out. Doing 5 rounds of that is a solid workout that doesn’t take much time, but it will do a number on your legs.
This can also be done for time as well if you prefer, or mixed with another workout as well (though I wouldn’t double down on legs, so perhaps an arm, chest, or back workout).
It is really low tech. You just need a jump rope, or a long string to be your rope that you will jump under and over. The typical setup is a jump rope tied across two chairs. In the video, Edwin used some bag dummies to weigh down the chairs in case he hit the rope, but that isn’t necessary.
