One of my favorite warm-up movements is the Shin Box drill.
It helps warm up and activate the hips which is great for grapplers and has some good carryover to helping establish good Jiu-Jitsu mobility.
Try a couple of rounds for 30-60 seconds.

In this video, I answer a question from Kim, who was asking advice about how to get back to BJJ training after having an ACL reconstruction surgery in her knee.
The ACL (Anterior Cruciate Ligament) is a ligament responsible for helping stabilize your shin bone relative to your knee and in many cases requires surgical repair if injured badly enough.
ACL Reconstruction can vary in duration and has. fairly lengthy rehab and recovery time. If you have had ACL surgery this video will be helpful, and if you’ve injured your knee and are wanting to safely get back to training BJJ, then this video has some important information to help your return to the mats.

The other day I posted a BJJ video about being an older BJJ Black Belt. I know some of you said it’s only because of a belt. And that’s an easy scapegoat, but that’s not it.
Old champions and masters in other combat sports feel the similar things. I’ve spoken to champions in wrestling and kickboxing who got older and struggled with the realization that they weren’t what they used to be.
That said, I talked about it. And in today’s BJJ drilling and rolling video here’s a great example of me going through it. The video is from a training session from a few weeks ago when I was coming back from Costa Rica. You’ll see some knee on belly drills first followed by rolling. During the rolling I got subbed by a couple of my students and became the “nail” instead of the hammer. This is something I talk about in videos, but maybe it’ll be useful for you to see it too.
So enjoy the drills and enjoy watching the Chewster be the nail instead of the hammer.

DEALING WITH TIGHT FOREARMS AND WRISTS AFTER JIU-JITSU TRAINING…then check out this quick sequence to stretch the forearms and wrists.
Try wrist rocking to improve wrist mobility as well as to stretch and release tight forearm muscle from gripping.
Start with the easiest version with fingers forward and then advance to divers pointed out, and also fingers pointed back.
Perform each sequence 5 repetitions for 5-10 second holds.
Make sure to perform these movements to comfort.

One of my favorite movements for the spine and hips is “The World’s Greatest Stretch.” I love to add a dynamic hip flexor and hamstring mobility component to make this a more complete mobility sequence.
3-5 reps per side, 3-5 second holds
