The Americana gets a bad rap these days for being a low-percentage submission. That basically just means you don’t currently see it hit often in high-level competition. But ultimately, the Americana / ude garami / double wrist lock (lots of names for it) is a valid and powerful submission. It just needs some details.
In this video, we look at setups and finishing mechanics for this arm lock, as well as common mistakes that prevent it from working at higher levels. I hope this is helpful, regardless of your experience with this submission.
Included in this video:
0:40 – Basic Americana from Mount
2:55 – Breaking Anatomy
3:42 – Better Strategies for Americana from Mount
5:55 – Americana from Side Control
7:44 – Slot Machine Americana from Guard
9:30 – Americana from Crucifix
10:55 – Ude Garami from Kesa Gatame
12:00 – South Americana from Bottom Side

This is what it looks like when you give someone the authority and the obligation to enforce the law without giving them the training to do it safely and effectively. I don’t know the backstory, but if anyone has contact with these British officers, let them know I want to sponsor them to attend GST. 🙏🏼

In today’s video I answer a recent question about breaking the closed guard in BJJ (Gi or No-GI), WITHOUT getting swept in the process.
In Brazilian Jiu-jitsu, the Closed Guard is one of the most dangerous positions to be stuck in. It’s also a great position for your opponent to sweep or submit you if you’re not careful.
Therefore, it’s important to try and approach it with caution and technique when breaking it.
This Guard Break is both beginner friendly and extremely effective (in my experience) and hopefully a useful idea for you to practice next time you’re in training.
I hope this helps.

Use you better to open the shoulders
We launched the Sleeper Hold on Kickstarter 29 days ago, and in that time over 15,000 Backers pledged over $900,000 which means we’ll be shipping over 30,000 Sleeper Hold Travel Pillows as soon as we finish production!
I wanted to get some feedback from real users so I loaned out my prototypes to friends and backers who had trips planned. Safe to say, they enjoyed the best airplane sleep of their lives and they never want to travel without the Sleeper Hold again!
Today is the last full day to pre-order your Sleeper Hold on Kickstarter for up to 50% off https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/sleeperhold/travelpillow/ by 6am on Friday, June 2, it’s over.
Today’s BJJ question comes from Cody who is curious about if you can give 100% in training without going ultra-crazy and 100% intensity.
So in the video I share my ideas of why I can’t go 100% in training. Not that I don’t want to or that I choose not to, but why I simply can’t.
I also talk about different styles of training where 100% intensity isn’t needed and wouldn’t be helpful.
If you have a similar question, I hope this helps you out as well.
