In today’s video I answer a question from a BJJ Black Belt coach who feels like he’s burnt out with teaching.
His question is how I stay motivated even after I’ve been doing it as long as I have. So in today’s video I share my mindset and how I stay motivated to teach BJJ, run a gym and some ideas for any BJJ coach who might be in the same boat.
Hopefully this is helpful to you if you’re in a similar situation.

Slipping punches is in my opinion the ideal way to counter punches. You absorb no damage whatsoever from your opponent, and you put yourself in the best position to counter strike with power.
As a general rule of thumb, we look to slip on the outside of straight punches, keeping us aware from the free hand of the opponent. Which ever side we slip to, we will have our hips “cocked” to fire a power punch on that side.
For looping punches like a hook or an overhand right, we use the bob and weave. It starts off like a slip moving away from the punch, followed by ducking underneath and swinging back towards the punch (but still under). This also allows you to get a power punch on the way out.
Furthermore, you could also slip and punch simultaneously, returning the same punch your opponent is throwing at you, which can be very effective too.

The Hook can be a tricky punch for a beginner to learn. It can be easily mistaken for a loopy arm punch, which would become a slap instead of a solid power strike.
The key to the lead hook is realize that the arm position should be fixed as if your arm is in a cast to an open L shape. So the rotation is going to come from rotating your hips and shoulder.
As you see here, I first focus on hip rotation, which is going to bring weight from the lead leg to the rear leg. Next is shoulder rotation, as we rotate the shoulder to bring our fist across our target. What’s great about learning it like this is that you can quickly see that when you work good shoulder rotation, your hips will want to join along to help your body rotation. The two combined in unison result in a powerful left hook.

The second strike that is learned is the cross. The first power punch in a budding martial artist’s arsenal, it is vital to understand that the power comes from the waist down.
People who try to arm punch will be very disappointed with their impact. Instead, they need to learn to use the power from driving through the legs to rotate their hips, transferring weight from the rear leg to the lead leg and by extension their fist.
