Achieving optimal efficiency in transitions through deliberate disconnection from your opponent. You have to know when to let go. Timely detachments from your opponent can be used to maintain control, lure your opponent into a submission, survive an attack, build momentum, and more. The most challenging aspect of this principle is the need to overcome the internal struggle that invariably occurs every time you need to release something of value in order to get or keep something of greater value.

Passing very flexible guards is difficult, period. When the guard player can invert, monitor, replace and defend with lots of dynamic flexibility, you are likely to have a hard time securing the pass. This video shows some principles, techniques and tricks for dealing with this kind of flexible guard, no gi edition. Obviously, lots of other ways exist for dealing with this, but these are just a few I selected to illustrate so principles I think are important. I hope this helps.
Please be sure to turn on notifications for new videos if you haven’t, so you can find out as soon as I upload a new one each week.

One of my Patreon members asked me to cover a problem he’s having. He likes to pass low and tight (as do I).
But, one of the dangers of this style of passing is that you are susceptible to the Guillotine choke.
And, often when people get caught in the choke their instinctive (and learned) defences just push them into bigger problems.
So, I made this video to show him how I defend guillotines – and it all begins with understanding how the choke works and how to prevent their choking mechanics.
If you like my particular focus and style of teaching, you can get this kind of instruction almost daily for only $10/Month.

If jiu-jitsu is the language, then connection is the alphabet. There are at least 32 anatomical connections that we seek to optimize in jiu-jitsu. Once you master them, there is no limit to what you can accomplish. The purpose of any connection, or combination of connections, typically falls into one of three categories: movement prevention, movement promotion, or movement prediction. Each connection is actualized via push or pull, and in some cases, simultaneous pushing and pulling. When a connection is facilitated by gravity, it’s called “pressure.”

Today’s BJJ technique video comes from a question about how to escape side control from a heavier opponent who’s squeezing tight. Before I get into the video I just gotta say. Learning to escape a heavier opponent starts by training with heavier people and learning not to freak out. Sounds too simple of course. But it’s super difficult.
With that said, this escape from a traditional head and arm side control seen in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu will work whether the person is heavier or smaller.
The key to the escape is to get the person off balance. And honestly that is what the main focus of this video is about. How to off balance the top person so we can escape their side control.
Hope the video is useful.
