The first finish from the TV finish is to take the back. Another simple attack to counter your opponent’s most common reaction to being put into the bottom TV.
The back take is composed of a few steps. First, sliding your knee under their hip (or if you can get your hook in early, even better). Second, throw your outside hook in. Third, switch your hands controlling their wrist. Fourth, sit up and put your chest square on their back as you weave for the choke – looking to hook their far shoulder close to their neck. Finally, roll your hips to face the ceiling to release your bottom leg to get the final hook (if you didn’t get it earlier).
To finish the one arm choke, keep your hand hook tight to their neck as your elbow drags over their other shoulder. Your choking arm shoulder should be leaning in towards the back of their head to help create push pressure from behind, and your other hand controlling their wrist should be pulling it in tightly towards you (to prevent them from turning into the choke).

Leigh Remedios is a black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Judo, Traditional Ju Jitsu and Tae Kwon Do. He is a prolific competitor and has competed internationally in martial arts, including the UFC and Polaris. He has won several prestigious competitions, including the NAGA United Kingdom Grappling Championship belt and European IBJJF no-gi gold medals. Leigh runs a Jiu Jitsu and MMA Academy in Wiltshire, UK: http://www.vtjj.co.uk
Leigh’s throwing system for Jiu Jitsu is based on a simple gripping strategy and rolling takedowns that resemble guard sweeps. The intention is that Jiu Jitsu players will be able to utilise familiar skills to get a collar grip and turn someone over from underneath.
Tomoe Nage is a useful throw for Jiu Jitsu as it mimics the guard pull with a foot on the hip. This means that Tori can pull guard as usual but with the added bonus of a potential throw for two points. In this Yoko Tomoe Nage variation, Uke has not given the gripping requirements for Yoko Wakare or Sumi Gaeshi and has instead forced a neutral grip with their hips back. Tori, therefore, takes higher grips on the collar and sleeve to assist in breaking Uke’s posture. This is the kuzushi for the throw.

Today’s question comes from a Purple Belt who has an interesting question that many upper belts in BJJ might experience.
Basically, he’s realized that he’s in a gym where he’s 1 of the higher belts on the mat and the number of more experienced grapplers is getting smaller and smaller. He wants to continue improving with his Brazilian Jiu-jitsu skills, but he’s worried that without higher belts to push him it won’t happen.
So in the video I share some ideas and 2 strategies to improve even if you don’t have a ton of higher-level training partners. And if you use these strategies you might find that some of your most productive rolling rounds (as far as skill growth goes) aren’t even your hardest.
Now, if you’re at a lower experience level you can use these strategies just the same.
Thanks for watching.
