When passing against someone with more experience, do you often find yourself getting sucked right into trouble? It might have to do with your initial approach and base!
In this clip from the Nogi Passing Masterclass I show how to position yourself properly to avoid attacks and sweeps while setting up your own guard passes. Try it next time in class and see just how effective it is.
I have just released a product that has been a long time coming. Doing nogi and passing have become a staple in my grappling game and I’m really happy to present over an hour of my best and most powerful concepts. Check it out here:

First thing you have to keep in mind. You are already caught in a terrible position and you messed up a long time ago. So this escape may not work every single time.
But! It does give you a great fighting chance.
The key is to lock your opponents hips in place so they can’t follow you or attack the Armbar.
You can do so at first with your hand. Once you feel you are pretty settled in the squat. You can use the hand to help out with opening the legs if they arnt popping.
P.S. no liabilities

The Raven: this is a combat variation of Tsuri-goshi. In this example, which is also the best variation to train the basic form of the Raven, we approach an upright opponent from the back. Obviously, different approaches and different grip fighting sequences will pose their own unique challenges and opportunities, but one must begin somewhere. In fact, we will show you a few competitive set ups on our youtube channel “NikandSi,” so be sure to check that out. Thanks for watching! Warning: the proper breakfall for this throw is not for beginners. It requires gyaku-zenpo-kaiten, which is like a granby–so do not attempt this throw–unless you and your partner have been properly trained. Nik and Si are experts at breakfall, so use a crash pad.

Continuing from the Cheap Choke setup, we could also work into a Ninja Choke, which is like a reverse rear naked choke.
The half guard frame is once again a good way of setting this up, and once locked in it is lights out. It is nice because a lot of people are not used to this type of choke, especially from this entry. Check it out:
