De la Riva is one of the most popular guards (along with variations of it) for competition in gi, no gi and even to a lesser degree in MMA. Understanding not only how to set up sweeps and submissions from this guard, but just how to energetically play this guard in general, can mean the difference between having a lot of success with it as a valuable tool, or failing miserably every time you try to access it. In this video, I discuss some extremely useful attacks with DLR, as well as ways to set it up and control it well. Hope you enjoy.

Adding more top pressure in BJJ is something everyone wants to do, right? So, in this video I’m going to show a simple way to do it. When I watch some of my less experienced Brazilian Jiu-jitsu students in top positions, I notice they sometimes don’t maximize their bodyweight. Meaning, they have a lot of weight pressed into the mat and not the person their rolling with. And in some cases their weight isn’t placed in the most ideal spot to restrict the breathing of their opponent.
So, in this video I’ll share some details with you on how to make the most of your bodyweight and add some crushing top pressure in positions like mount and side control. The tip is ultra-simple, but when applied is super-effective.
This tip is also coming about because I’m in the process of changing up my game a bit to be a bit more slower and tighter. As a fella who’s getting closer to 40 I’m realizing I’ve gotta slow my game down just a hair to be more competitive with younger guys instead of getting into all out scrambles and being movement focused like I used to be.
Hope the idea helps ya!

On average, cops in America get less than 4 hours of defensive tactics training per year, so it’s no surprise that we see so many disastrous use of force encounters going viral. Most law enforcement agencies will blame lack of funding, but the ones who are doing it right have discovered something remarkable: the money needed for better training of officers comes from having better trained officers. The resulting reduction in injuries, to officers and civilians, results in a measurable redirection in worker’s comp claims AND a reduction in excessive force lawsuits against the agency and the money saved in this respect more than pays for the training improvements!

These three escapes for the head and arm choke (arm triangle) give options for the most common energies you’re likely to encounter. Honestly, the 3rd escape is the highest percentage, but oftentimes, the others are necessary to elicit the energy for it to work optimally.
