More on the hair grab defense! If the standard armlock doesn’t work and you’re getting hit, it’s good to have options. Sitting to the guard may seem counterintuitive but one hand is already occupied by grabbing the hair. The foot in the hip is the most basic open guard in Jiu-jitsu and offers a great deal of control and distance management. This situation also allows the free leg to block punches from the free hand, up kick which is very powerful and even catch submissions like the triangle.
