The Los Angeles Police Department had their lead arrest and control instructors trained in new SafeWrap system to explore the possibility of training all officers in the system.
SafeWrap is a proprietary system of restraint that is designed to maximize physical control while reducing the risk of injury to all parties involved in a use of force encounter.
The system was created by Gracie University in response to inquiries from healthcare institutions that needed a way to safely restrain aggressive, suicidal, or emotionally disturbed patients in hospitals. With patient safety as the top priority, it was imperative that the system utilize no joint locks, no choke holds, and no strikes. The system was specifically designed to minimize compression of the diaphragm to facilitate free breathing and reduce the potential of a panicked response in the restrained individual.
Due to the tremendous success of its application, it was quickly realized that SafeWrap had the potential to facilitate improved outcomes across various public and private sector organizations, while maintaining the public’s confidence in the frontline personnel of these organizations. Institutional applications include, but are not limited to: Law Enforcement, Corrections, Probation/Parole, Fire / EMS, Healthcare, Security, Flight Attendants, Elderly Care, Education, and Childcare.
The SafeWrap system is patent pending worldwide and requires a license for institutional use. The benefit of the license is that it allows Gracie University to stipulate the terms of the system’s use, particularly as it pertains to minimum training requirements, to ensure that end-users are sufficiently trained in this potentially life-saving system.
Gracie University is actively gathering data on the system’s effectiveness. For this reason, there is currently no cost for “early adopter” military, law enforcement, and first responder organizations to acquire a SafeWrap license.

Today, we’ve got a question from Gary, who is questioning the usefulness of traditional Jiu-Jitsu warmups.
He wanted to check out this other gym, which is known for its high-level BJJ competitors. When he went, he was surprised to learn that they do no warm-ups before getting into drilling.
This took him by surprise, especially since there were so many world-class competitors on the mats.
It also gave him some doubts about the 20–30-minute warmups at gyms.
This is a pretty common realization for guys who cross-train. Lots of people have different opinions about the topic, and in this video, I’ll give my perspective.
Thanks for watching.

Since its inception in 1869, the Los Angeles Police Department has always taught officers to handcuff subjects from a prone position. Today, we had the opportunity to introduce their lead Arrest and Control instructors to the SafeWrap System, and it couldn’t have been more well received.
To kick off this instructor course for 100+ attendees, I called two officers to try and arrest me under these circumstances:
1) I am a mental health patient
2) My mom called you because I became angry and attacked her after not getting my favorite cereal
3) My family is recording the encounter with their phones, and anything they do will be seen by the world
4) I have a knife stashed (and they have no idea)
After this demo, me and @ryrongracie proceeded to SafeWrap the larger of the two volunteers who fought with all his might to avoid arrest. Safe to say he was not successful.
Simply put, while prone restraint can be safe and effective is some cases, when used as the default response in 2-on-1 encounters against and resistant subject, it gives the subject three distinct tactical advantages:
1) The subject can build the house
2) The subject can hide their hands
3) The subject can access their waistband (weapons)
Not only is SafeWrap designed to neutralize all three of these concerns, it also provides the additional benefit of giving the users visibility of the subject’s face throughout the encounter which is essential for medical monitoring.
