Today’s video is going to be a little bit longer, but it’ll be worth it if you’re struggling with your Guard Retention.
A message came in from a viewer named Collin who says his guard retention sucks, it gets shredded, and he wants some tips to get better at this area of his BJJ.
With that being said, as a guy who came to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu from Wrestling, I’ll give you a couple reason my guard retention sucked at first and then give you some of the solutions I’ve found in my Jiu-Jitsu journey.
I’ll give you 8 different tips in this video, in no order of importance.
Hopefully, if you’re struggling with your guard retention like Collin, then you found this video helpful.
Thanks for watching.

Several people have sent me this viral video involving San Bernadino County Sheriff’s Office Deputies relating to the arrest of a robbery suspect. The UOF is currently under investigation and the Deputy seen throwing the knees to the subject’s head is currently on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
Coincidentally, I was sent another video this week from an incident at the Douglass County Sherrif’s Office in Colorado, where the deputies involved received their in-service GST training exactly THREE DAYS prior to the incident captured on video.
Even though these are unrelated incidents in different states, and we don’t have all the details, the contrast between the two serves as a powerful reminder of the difference that training can make.

What’s up guys,
Today’s video is going to be about the upcoming Chewjitsu Opens & Seminars.
Recently we had our first tournament, with 300+ competitors, here in my hometown of Louisville, Kentucky.
Unlike most Jiu-Jitsu competitions, the Chewjitsu Open is a round robin formatted tournament with Madison Bracketing (Explained more in the video).
What I wanted to do with this Jiu-Jitsu competition was to make it very competitor friendly. The focus is to help up and coming competitors (or even experienced competitors) get more experience.
If you want to compete in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, especially at any higher level, the more experience you force yourself to get, the better.
In wrestling we were able to compete weekly and that’s the reason Wrestlers tend to do super well in most Jiu-Jitsu competitions.
The worst part of trying to get comp reps in Jiu-Jitsu, is that losing means you’re done.
There is no back-side or consolation bracket like there is in Wrestling. You could spend $1000 in fees with travel, hotel, registration, etc., go 0-1 and leave with nothing but a sour taste in your mouth.
That’s why we started these tournaments.
If you’re interested in signing up for one these tournaments you can check out the link below. You’ll also see the schedule and locations for each Tournament & Seminar:
Thanks for watching!
