Running Georges and Gordon through their guard retention/counter offense drills: Remember this always – there are ten thousand possible skills from guard – all of them can be effective in their own way – BUT NONE OF THEM WILL BE EFFECTIVE IF YOU CANNOT EXHIBIT THE FIRST AND MOST IMPORTANT SKILL OF ALL GUARD PLAY – THE ABILITY TO HOLD/RETAIN GUARD LONG ENOUGH TO BE EFFECTIVE. Make retention your first skill in building your guard game and you will create a firm foundation upon which you can build the kind of devastating attacking guard game you see my students employ and which you can learn. Guard retention may not be the most exciting guard skill to learn, but it’s the most important because it’s the one that all the other other skills of guard play depend upon.

Guard retention study. About the worst position you can be in when in outside ashi Garami. Note- this is NOT a leg drag. Don’t be an idiot and confuse a leg drag, where your legs are safe, and outside ashi garami, where you can get your leg broken, 2 completely different positions. Here, yuri has a full body lock with his knee on the floor. His goal is to control the upper body, sprawl to separate my legs, then pass by flanking my right side. My goal is to keep his leg entangled (by locking a figure 4 with my legs), and use a series of pumping motions with my legs to create space for my legs to come back inside and start facing him, all while maintaining upper body inside position. Notice my hands In perfect position, never allowing him to make a cranial shift (moving to control of the head and shoulders), followed by a subtle pumping of the legs, then a spin to cross ashi, which I opted for since heel hooks were illegal in ibjjf. Normally I’d recover to outside ashi and attack heel hooks, but in this case, sweeping from cross ashi made much more sense.
