TRABALHO OU DIVERSÃO!
It’s not always easy to sink in that rear naked choke. Sometimes as you are digging under their neck, you fall short of being able to clasp the shoulder. When you fall short, you go into a short choke, aka the Fedor choke.
The key here is to dig your other arm’s elbow into their back as if you were going to do preacher curls off their back. Your head also pushes behind their head to help create the choking collision of his neck and your forearm.
But even the short choke can fall short if they tuck their chin in. Then we just use the same short choke mechanics for a neck crank. This one is no fun for the partner, so practice caution when using this.
Finally, if this person was so tough that you couldn’t even turn their chin to get across their neck, we rake their chin the opposite way and go into a bull dog choke. This is my best way of setting up a bull dog choke, and it is a devastating choke when done right. Just like with the RNC, keep your hips pointing down as you lift high up on the hands and drop your shoulder behind their neck.

The questions I get more than any other are nearly always regarding how to deal with bigger, stronger opponents…and it’s kind of a weird question, because I always try to use things that work on everyone. The main answer is you have to be more precise with your technique when dealing with bigger people because there’s less room for mistakes and more severe punishment for flawed technique.
However, if I had to address the technical aspect of dealing with bigger opponents, I would say that understanding frames is one of the most crucial things. So in this video, I show one of the best positions to illustrate strong and active framing, which is the knee shield position. I hope this helps.

In today’s video I reply to a comment from one of my recent videos where a viewer said that “BJJ coaches hold back students to maximize profits.” I’m paraphrasing a bit there, but the idea is accurate.
So, I share my thoughts on this idea as to whether or not BJJ coaches, or martial arts gyms in general, hold their students back to maximize profits or if there is something else going on.
After watching the video you’re welcome to contribute to the comments with your own thoughts and ideas about the subject in BJJ and martial arts gyms.
Thanks for watching.

If you’d ever like to train with the team and I. Check out my gym Derby City MMA in Louisville,KY.
If you’re playing half guard and your opponent gets chest to chest on you, especially if he also gets a crossface and an underhook, then you’re in a LOT of trouble. He’s going to put a TON of pressure on you and make your life absolutely miserable. In this section from the BJJ for Old F***s instructional (https://www.grapplearts.com/oldguard) Rob Biernacki shows you exactly how you can use a series of upper body frames including your hands, your elbows, your wrists, and even your torso itself to keep his weight off of you.
Framing like this gives you the space you need to move into an underhook and work towards his back, or bring your legs back into play to achieve a knee shield guard or some variation of an open guard.
If you found this useful then here are a couple more videos on Youtube that might be of some use as well…
