Back when I used to be an athlete! Now I’m just a fat old man trying to teach some stuff! @american.judo @judo.fanatics @judogallery
Today’s video is a series of stretches I like using after BJJ training to help improve recovery from hard rolling sessions and improve guard retention abilities.
I started doing these back in 2020 to loosen up my hips while I had some free time away from the gym. I’m a person who’s not the most flexible. And by doing these stretches on a regular basis I found my hips became more flexible, my guard retention improved and I believe they help with my recovery after training.
I’m sharing them with you because I find a lot of people who come in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu classes have super tight hips. Tight hips are a problem in BJJ for a lot of reasons. And being effective off of your back is one of them.
So in the video I’ll show you the stretches and explain why I use them during.
Hope the video and the stretches help you!

Principle 26: Ratchet
Creating persistent incremental advancements in one direction while preventing motion in the opposite direction.
A ratchet is a mechanical device that allows incremental linear or rotary motion in one direction, while preventing motion in the opposite direction. In jiu-jitsu, we use “macro ratchets” and “micro ratchets.” Macro ratchets pertain to advancements of your entire body, while micro ratchets pertain to advancements of a specific body part. The Ratchet Principle, like the River Principle, is rooted in persistence. While the River Principle is like water flowing around a problem, the Ratchet Principle is akin to a snake squeezing the life out of its prey with each exhalation.

I actually aired live on CNN. I’m not sure any other martial artist has been on @cnn other than @cnnsport.
Thank you @biancanobilo for speaking so compassionate in this piece. Also thank you @jessiegretener who also works for @cnn for getting this to me. You’re both greatly appreciated.
I have always said, my pain is for a purpose.
I have gotten probably over 1,000 dms from other men that have been sexually abused and never spoke about it.
Actually one of my students confided in me the other day.
You need to understand, it took me 30 years to speak about it, and I was still reluctant. However, my co author @louiejm3 reminded me how many men this will help.

I truly Love the Triangle Choke!
You could argue that I’m built for triangles: Long, lanky and flexible. But does that mean that shorter legged people cannot effectively do triangles?
I have been practicing and teaching BJJ since 1996. In that time I have developed my own game to encompass triangle attacks from every imaginable position.
I have also worked hard to develop a game that will work for everyone. (Short legged people too!).
Even if you cannot fully lock a triangle – I have a path for you.
In this latest instructional (my first triangle video) I pour my whole triangle game into it.
In part 1, “Guard Attacks” (of 3), you’ll dig deep into my guard attack system…
This includes: Spider guard, spider / lasso guard, half spider, inside / outside / bi-lateral knee shields, the power of the over-hook (plus modified versions), unique joint submissions and more.
Everything is translatable for BOTH Gi and No-Gi…
If you’re short legged… this is the triangle video for you!
My hope with releasing this instructional is that everyone can experience the same joy I do when I look someone directly in the face and smile as I squeeze a tight triangle!

There is a very important distinction between BJJ for Sport and BJJ for Self-Defense/Fighting.
It’s not so much about techniques but about the distances you fight from and the postures you use.
These have to be trained because if your instinct is to adopt the wrong posture or distance versus a powerful striker you may not have time to correct your mistake once you start taking damage.
In this video, I teach how to pass guard vs someone trying to kick at you. The posture and positioning are almost the exact opposite of a Sport situation as the threat presented is almost the exact opposite (the guard player trying to to strike to make distance as opposed to trying to entangle the passer in order to grapple).
I don’t emphasise it enough in this video but I do later in class – you need to really focus on keeping the lead knee very bent forward to stop kicks to the knee hyperextending the leg).
If you like my particular focus and style of teaching, you can get this kind of instruction almost daily for only $10/Month.
