Today’s video comes from a 6 month BJJ White Belt who’s also a Judo Brown Belt. He’s loving his beginning in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu and has plenty to work on with the ground game.

He recently had an experience where he was called a sandbagger by someone at another gym during an open mat. I’ll get into details about it in the video.

But his main question is about whether or not he should divulge details about his previous Judo experience to people in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu when he travels to other schools. He’s been reluctant to do this because he doesn’t want to come across as cocky or that he’s some Judo phenom.

In the video I’ll share 2 examples of students I’ve had who were White Belts in BJJ but had extensive background in Wrestling and Judo and how things went.

The Lead Hook is a staple of boxing and a must have tool in your striking arsenal. But did you know you can also use it to wrestle?

With this tactic that I call a hook pull, we disguise a head club with a lead hook. This draws our opponent’s defense to block the hook – leaving them susceptible to the head snap.

We can fire a nice knee right off the snap, or transition to a snap down from the front headlock.

Just like with the jab, we can slip a cross and get a nice double leg entry. But with the cross the slip is much more effective, as a cross will shift your opponent’s weight much more. This results in a really easy take down.

This shoulder wrap type of clinch from guard is interesting and fun. I can not only lead to some great sweeps, transitions and submission setups, it can act as a counter-measure against some passes and offensive movements your opponent may throw at you. As I mention in this video, I learned this from Greg Nelson some time ago, and I have been playing with it, trying to get a deeper understanding and make it my own. Here are some of the best, highest-percentage uses I have gained from it. Hope you guys like it!

The overhand right is a big weapon in MMA, and has been famously used by wrestlers to KO their opponent’s. But it is also well used as a take down entry, as the big threat of the overhand will draw your opponent’s attention to blocking it.

What’s great about this is that the footwork of the overhand puts you in prime position for a strong double that will catch your opponent’s feet square.
